Vanessa Valera: For thousands of years, people have used Chinese herbs for healthcare applications. Dr. Irwin Ma joins us today to tell us a little bit about this story.
Dr. Irwin Ma: People who understand why there are so my Chinese around? They do have the longest history, yet they do have the largest populations nowadays in the world. One of the things is because they know so much about their Chinese herbal medicines. Now they have almost 20,000 types, although the most popular ones are in today's herbal store maybe about 500-600 different types.
Vanessa Valera: Can you tell us the properties of each one?
Dr. Irwin Ma: In front of me the most typical ones are the first, those are very similar to the in a sync family, although it's more popular. These kinds of herbs helps people to regenerate which is very, very different from the approach of western medicine.
Vanessa Valera: If we take a look at the texture of these two in particular, it seems like a wood or a piece of wood, how do you use this?
Dr. Irwin Ma: They do have a different form, either into the a powder form or into the liquid extract form. This is particularly good for people who are weak in the spleen where the while blood cell is generated. A lot of times, when we are sick, our organs are weakened and our hormonal secretion becomes so weak that we can't balance ourselves.
So it makes us feel not too strong, but not sick and sometimes we doctors could prescribe some artificial hormones, but it has side effects. We do have an alternative which is from the ocean. This is one of them. This is some kind of a fish, we call it Mamuji Kau (ph).
Vanessa Valera: Mamuji Kau.
Dr. Irwin Ma: Yeah, that's it. Personally, I recovered from a very severe problem about 8-9 years ago. I went through like all different types of doctors, maybe about 50 of them, and I wasn't sick, so they kicked me out. You are not sick, all those indicators or the blood test result are normal. But I said, why I feel only 60% of the energy. So what's wrong? Oh! They couldn't do anything. Until then I learned something from my master and then I learned from the Chinese medicine from there, the so called rehabilitating process started. Then in the next couple of years I recovered fully. Now I am teaching it to other people.
Vanessa Valera: Well, I'm glad you are.
Dr. Irwin Ma: Thank you!
