Hi and welcome to watchmojo.com. Today we’re going tell you all about the history of the MLBs opening day.
For the past century baseball has been considered above all other sports as America’s national past time. Opening day is the game that marks the beginning of the baseball season the only day where all teams are considered equal.
No other game of the 162 game seasons is waited to like that of opening day.
Part of opening day the team’s managers have to decide who will be the pitcher for the opening game. This role is usually reserved for the team’s ace pitcher and is considered an honor. In turn the pitchers that start on opening day are recognized throughout the baseball world as their teams best starting pitchers.
Opening day has also become a day for U.S Presidents to show their stuff. On April 14, 1910 President and baseball fan William Howard Taft attended the whole opening in Washington D.C. Since then 11 sitting U.S Presidents have tossed the season ceremonial first pitch.
Opening day in 1940 is remembered as the most famous pitching event as Cleveland Ace Bob Feller and White Sox Hurler Eddie Smith went head to head Feller is in control and threw the only opening day, no hitter in major league history.
I want to hang here and involve the crowd of Riverfront Stadium on his first swing of the 1974 season when tied Babe Ruth with a 714th career homerun.
Many other memorable events have occurred on opening day. From riots to homerun and snowballs to fastballs opening day doesn’t really affect the team season but the day continues to remain in the hearts and minds of baseball fans everywhere. We just can’t wait to here the words play ball.
Strike one.
First they do like pitcher like that, I’ll get it right this time.
