Health and Fitness: Pilates History.
Lauren Whitfield: It's pretty interesting. It was actually started in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates and what he did is, he attached springs to the hospital beds. He was trying to help the mobilized patients, so he can mobilize patients who are in the hospital beds attached springs to and he would do leg circles and leg work and arm work again focussing on the core, they were laying down doing these like for strengthening their legs, and then strengthening their core.
So, some of these patients were able to become not immobilized and if they were gonna stay immobilized in which they were getting extra size in their beds. From there, he established the reformer, which is a machine that has a bunch of different springs, which has different resistance.
The reformer also has straps on it, which pull the body and lengthen the body, so if you're doing different stretches with your legs or arms with these ropes or springs and straps are pulling the muscles longer than you could pull the muscles, if you are on the floor.
