Veronica: Long John Silver Blackbeard was just some of the man that proud the Eastern sea board of North America and the Caribbean.
Hi, I’m Veronica of watchmojo.com and today we’re learning more about these privateers, travelers and treasure trust carriers. So, we are now on a ship but not just any ship of higher ship or a privateer ship. Can you tell us about this please?
Christine: A privateer is somebody who was commissioned by government to attack enemy ship during war time. A pirate would attack any ship any time wasn’t loyal to anybody but himself. So, it actually, it was just and outlaw.
Veronica: What motive privateer and pirates hold today in North America’s history?
Christine: Actually the other role in the economic history, recently we realized that the other real impact specially privateers because they would sees and merchandise from the other colonies.
Veronica: So, were pirates the bad guys and the privateers were the good guys?
Christine: That would be a kind of a simplification of thing, because sometimes privateers during times where there were no war would turn to piracy. So, it was not a clear definite line between the two.
Veronica: They are, so when the stereotype associated with pirates one being the pirate, is this one true?
Christine: Well no, no captain would have a lot of pirate on his shoulder but actually they would carry sometimes exotic animals as pirate and monkeys. They could be merchandise, they could be sold because some rich people in Europe would like to have exotic animal as pet.
Veronica: Now if pirates will go to battle what type of weapons do they use?
Christine: Of course on board of the ship there is some cannons but when they would attack close to close and go on to another ship they would use guns, they would use swords, pistols, blunderbusses.
Veronica: So, do you think you could take us around this exhibit?
Christine: Yeah sure, we can see that actually with this object just behind you. These are different objects to help people actually noted themselves from the sea unfortunately they were not very accurate. We have two beautiful figure head presented in the exhibition. These are objects that we usually don’t see. This one is from the 17th Century and that one from the 18th Century. We know it was on the privateer ship. We can see here a ‘Gibbet’ which was a kind of a cage of medal after the men was hung for piracy is very—was often tore and put in that cage and expose at the port. This was some kind of warning the people saying, this is how we treat pirates here. So, we do present here some different flags of pirates and they were not all the same, each pirate have their own flag and there was a signification that would mean time send glass and this would be like violence if there was blood. And the good thing to know is that if the background was red, it usually meant that there would be no more mercy. So, if a pirate ship would attack you with the red flag, probably you wouldn’t survive.
