We are here to talk about the history of Valentine’s Day. Did you know that Saint Valentine was the person who was the namesake of that very special day, and it was actually very long goal in medieval times when people where imprisoned very easily in for a very long time. There were lovers that were separated and Valentine was a monk, and he would carry secret messages to and from the jail for these lovers.
And, he basically was called the saint because he was allowing these two lovers, one of them was, I believe was destined to be hung. And, it was very tragic, it was; but he was known as the person to ask if you have a secret message for your loved one. That he would somehow spirit that message into a, places where you are not allowed to have any communication, and that is where Saint Valentines was created. And, for years after that, people started to just on that day that was named Saint Valentines Day.
They would make messages to hand to their loved one, but it was supposed to be a secret, initially. And then, as you all know, now it is a very popular holiday, where everybody will make cards for people that they like, their friends, kids will take pre-made valentines to school and everybody in their class gets of valentine.
There is a box usually that setup in the classroom with the big heart on it that is destined to receive the valentines, and everybody puts them in there and at a certain given time the teacher will open the box and hand out all of the valentines. And, and that is in keeping with the concept to secrecy that was originally in stated with Saint Valentine.
So, if you have somebody that you care about, there are many different ways of celebrating Saint Valentines Day. One thing that I did one year was, I was asked to do a singing telegram, and the woman that hired me had a crush on this fellow who work in the bar. And, I walk into this bar and, early it was, before everyone was there in the fishnets, tails, top hat and I sang him a song from this girl.
Unfortunately, he was not all that interested in this lady and he never did know quite why she went to that extent but it was a whole lot of fun. And, there are many different ways, chocolates have become a really traditional way to celebrate Valentines Day. And, here on Martha’s Vineyard, we go to chew more chocolates, and it is a good time, you know, it is an aphrodisiac so you better be careful who you are giving to.
