Ohhh, sooo close!! The Stanley Cup is in fact not the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes, that title belongs to the America's Cup in the sport of Sailing, which was first awarded in 1851 and most recently won back by the United States by the crew of Larry Ellison's Oracle BMW Team. That's embarrassing, too bad

The History of the NHL Stanley Cup

In 1926, the NHL adopted the Stanley Cup as its trophy and that same year the Ottawa Senators defeated the Boston Bruins to win the first ever Stanley Cup in NHL history. The NHL Stanley Cup was the only North American major sports trophy that has not remained in season. At the end of each year, the NHL champion has to return the trophy, however each team player and every person on management gets their name engraved on the trophy, it’s the oldest sports trophy competed for by professional athletes. It is interesting to know that Hockey legends like Jacques Plante and Bob Gainey have their name misspelled on the trophy. In fact, Jacque Plante has his name misspelled the five times on the trophy.
