The History of the World Cup

After soccer was dropped from the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics due to low popularity in the United States of soccer, FIFA President Jules Rimet organized the first ever FIFA World Cup. It was held in 1930 in Uruguay and all nations affiliated with FIFA were invited to come and play. However, due to high cost across the Atlantic, only four nations from Europe were able to make the trip. The final featured the host Uruguay defeating Argentina for the two. Since 1974, the champion receives the FIFA World Cup trophy. The trophy is made if five kilograms of solid gold and it features the names of all the winning nations since 1974 on the bottom. The winning team receives the trophy on loan for four years while they receive a gold plated replica to keep.
