Raena Morgan: Hi, I'm Raena Morgan with iHealthTube. I'm here speaking with Lyle Hurd today, the Editor of Total Health Magazine. This is a nationally distributed magazine. It's a wealth of information on how we can be proactive with our health. And today, Lyle, welcome.
Lyle Hurd: Good morning. I'd like to reverse our roles if you don't mind once at least.
Raena Morgan: Sure.
Lyle Hurd: Very few people have any idea what pH means, what pH levels have to do as far as impacting on our body, and you're an expert in that area, and I'd like you to explain to us, if you would, what pH is all about and maybe what we can do to make sure that we're getting the kind of help we need.
Raena Morgan: Well, the thing about pH is that, when we think of pH, we think of pH in our swimming pools. The pH the batteries, alkaline battery can run and run and run, right? Our whole body has where there's a pH to our skin, pH in our cells, pH in our stomach, which is acidic, pH in our gallbladder which is alkaline. So this is balance between our bodies and the outside environment, where pH is very important. It breaks down into the acid-alkaline balance. Our bloodstreams are alkaline, slightly alkaline at 7.1, that's the pH of our bloodstreams. It also happens to be the pH of the ocean, so which we're supposed to come from. And we live in a very acidic environment, the beverages and the foods that we eat are acidic. Our lifestyle stress causes acidity. I mean, just drinking a cup of coffee, something as simple as that, it's very acid-forming.
Lyle Hurd: What are some of the indications of the fact that you might have a pH problem?
Raena Morgan: Well, osteoporosis is one of the big outcomes of leading an acidic lifestyle because what happens is calcium is an alkaline metal and the body in its wisdom, if it's too acidic, will leach calcium right out of the bones to neutralize the acidity in the bloodstream, because we must keep our bloodstreams at 7.1, the body must, or else we'll die. It has to stay alkaline. 7.0 is neutral in the acid-alkaline scale. So weakened bones, people typically are fatigued and cannot sleep when they're acidic. Jittery and anxious, those are some symptoms. Digestive problems are some of the symptoms of being overly acidic. Well, they take Alka-Seltzer. You know "alka", Alka-Seltzer is a alkalizing agent - it's baking soda and some other ingredients. Baking soda has a very high pH.
Lyle Hurd: Now, I understand that gum disease, gout and interstitial cystitis, which is a horrible condition of the bladder, all can be directly related to pH problems.
Raena Morgan: Allow pH gout uric acid gout you know that's what it is, accumulation of uric acid in the body, so yes that's true.
Lyle Hurd: Can you tell me a little bit about your product? I happen to have a box of which I am going to open and have some alkalizing tea with my lunch, but can you tell us a little bit about your product?
Lyle Hurd: I developed these products to help counteract that the acid, I call it the acid onslaught in our environment, because it's just, people smoke cigarettes, drink beer, drink coffee, drink sodas, eat hamburgers and cheese, and things that are all acid foods. They're not over-indulging in broccoli, which is alkaline. They're not over-indulging in yams, which are alkaline. They're over-indulging in the foods and the lifestyle that are very acidic. So I thought, well, it's hard to ask people to change their lifestyle, so why not offer them a product where they can have a cup a tea, that has a very high pH to off-set the acidity of the meal that they might have just eaten, or some of the ingredients in the meal they just have eaten. Like pH testing paper in my line so that you can test your saliva and your urine to find out how acid or how alkaline you are and usually it's going to be to the acid side. Although there are people who are too alkaline, but they don't that their numbers are just they are small. So I have a meal replacement that's very highly alkaline, alkalizing drops, everything to just counteract, rather than ask people to change their lifestyle so much which we should, but at least counteract what's going on, the damage that's done.
Lyle Hurd: One final question.
Raena Morgan: Sure.
Lyle Hurd: Would you say that it's probably, maybe if it's not an imperative, it's extremely important that people consider getting some of that pH measuring material and being able to know where their pH stands because many times it may be out of whack and you don't have any idea about it, but you should.
Raena Morgan: And that is the easiest, fastest way to do it. You can test in the morning upon arising. You can test both your urine and saliva, with the tape. It's very easy to do. Then, you wait and test again two hours after eating or drinking to see what impact the foods and beverages that you're consuming had on your pH. And it's astonishing, it just astonishing. I will do demonstrations in health food stores, and people will come in I'll just test their saliva and they'll just had something to eat and they'll say, 'oh I probably, you know, probably acidic' and sure enough, they're acid. I give them a little sip of the tea, they test their saliva again, it turns the strip turns blue which is alkaline and it's like that's the magic. At least there's something there to help them to counteract the acid.
