Anne Diamond: What is metabolism and why is it important? Think, if your metabolism as the engine in your body, it's like a little furnace burning away all day and night fueled both by the food you eat and the fat that you have within your body. The more muscle you have, the more fuel your engine will need to take over. Because of genetics, some women burn fat faster than others, but age, weight, diet and exercise have it also play a roll.
As we grow older, our metabolism slow down, mainly because we're losing five or six pounds of muscle in decade starting in the mid 20s that means we all might be burning a hundred fuel calories a day at 35, then 25 just doing nothing different, but there are easy things that you can do to keep your metabolism burning high or stoke it up after it becomes sluggish. Make sure you get plenty of sleep it helps your metabolism run really well. In a recent study, people who got four hours of sleep or less at night had difficulty in processing carbohydrates. When you're exhausted, your body lacks the energy to do its normal day-to-day functions, which include burning calories.
So, your metabolism is automatically lowered. It helps to know what your metabolism is, so you can keep it in mind.
