The Importance of Preventative Medicine

One topic that I really believe in this Preventative Medicine and regular visits to a
physician -- by Preventative Medicine, I mean if you’ve got a sick, talk a doctor, be
interviewed, ask about medical conditions, family history. Get a thorough physical
examination. Get a very complete blood test and urine test, and then do certain screening
tests which really are an extension of the physical examination.
By this I mean, screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm, screening mammography in
women after age 40 or some people start the age 35 with their first mammogram, and
then every year after age 40, screening colonoscopy after age 50, and preventative
vaccinations -- Hepatitis A, B vaccines, tetanus vaccines, HPV vaccines in children, of
course, all the childhood vaccinations.
Another important part of Preventative Medicine is modification of risk factors, diet, and
weight reduction, smoking cessation. We have some excellent medications now that can
actually help smokers ‘kick the habit,’ exercise, way too few of us exercise or remember,
support health care reform and see your doctor.
