Athena: Hi, my name is Athena. I'm from New York City and I'm 25 years old and I want to know if marijuana is an illegal drug, why is it used legally for medicinal purposes? Brad Lander: Well, Athena, marijuana does have medicinal purposes. There are medical uses for marijuana. But, like any medication or over the counter medication it can be misused or used illegally. If it is used and is not prescribed or it is used not as prescribed, those are illegal uses of the drug. Another problem now with marijuana to be aware of is, that marijuana is not regulated and when it is bought on the streets, it's full of additives and often time, herbicides and insecticides and so forth, they can be very, very dangerous.
