Todd Ogasawara, MobileViews.com and this is the first generation model of the Sony Play Station Portable or PSP. And the news is that, the new PSP is coming out in June 2009 and it is not going to support the UMD or Universal Media Disc that the PSP is used for movies, this is one of the few movies it came out in the UMD format as well as games. One of my favorite game is Luminous, I also bought Luminous 2. And I have to say I’m really not sad to see it go, I always worry that this format was a really bad idea. For example, let’s take a look at this game, see that? That is an exposed surface, there’s no cover for it, when it is outside of the PSP itself or outside of the protective case.
That’s just a disaster waiting to happen and I was always worried that I’d lose a game or you know permanently because this stock’s scratched or it got dusty or dropped in dust or whatever or you know I didn’t noticed it does put it here and ruin the mechanism in the PSP itself. So, the UMD was just a horrible design, the movies is interesting and not the movie disc has a cover on it. I don’t know why the game disc don’t but as you can see they are different thicknesses, let me see if I can put them side by side or on top of each other. So, this thick one up here is the UMD movie disc and this little one here with again no protective covering for the disc itself is the game disc.
So, I’m really not sad to see it go away. Apparently, you will be able to download your games to the new PSP if you can, I guess proof ownership at a kiosk or some game shop but that seems like a giant hassle take all the games down and download them. So, say goodbye to UMD apparently, I don’t think we’ll miss you and it’s a disaster waiting to happen in terms of a no protection for the disc surface. I hope this new Sony PSP does better than the old one, this thing can do too well. And that’s too bad because I thought this would become what the iPod touch has become which is a great portable web browser. This actually came with the web browser and firm ware, it’s not a very good one unfortunately. And it’s difficult to navigate so I never really used it much.
Well, in any case goodbye UMD, I won’t miss you.
