The deadliest terrorist attack on US soil prior to September the 11th 2001 was a home-grown affair.
At just after 9AM on Wednesday the 19th of April 1995, a 2300 kilogram bomb made up of fertilizer and nitro methane was detonated next to the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, a government office complex in downtown Oklahoma City.
The explosives have been packed into a rented Ryder truck by ex-soldier, Timothy McVeigh and his co-conspirator Terry Nichols.
The final death toll was 168 people, 19 of them were children. Many from the building’s daycare center just above where McVeigh left the truck. There were over 800 wounded. McVeigh was stopped and arrested within ninety minutes of the explosion.
During his trial, he declared his hatred at the US Government. Found guilty on eleven counts of murder and conspiracy, McVeigh was executed by lethal injection in 2001.
Terry Nichols is currently serving 161 concurrent life sentences. While the third accomplice, Michael Fortier testified against McVeigh and received a reduced sentence.
