Jennifer Matthews: A recent hospital state turned into a field trip for Samantha Morris. She got a first hand look at the newest pharmacy technology in her hospital.
Samantha Morris: I was very nifty. I need something in my room to pick up my clothes.
Jennifer Matthews: The IntelliFill i.v. automates the process of preparing medications for patients.
Jack Horn: We can increase accuracy one of two ways. We can either check things more, or we can automate the process.
Jennifer Matthews: In one hour, the computerized machine can fill 500 syringes with the same substance like saline or it can prepare a specific medication for a single patient in minutes.
Amanda Lane: Pulls the dose out, puts it into a syringe, labels the syringe with all of the patient information. It weighs it to make sure it has the correct amount in there, and then it will drop it into a separate bin and alert us that we have a patient-specific drug ready.
Jennifer Matthews: A computer screen keeps track of each syringe. If there's a problem, a red cap lights up, and that syringe is automatically discarded. Dispensing safe and accurate medication is key. Samantha knows she has cystic fibrosis and receives contaminated medication as a toddler.
Sherry Morris: She went there a lot, a lot of illness in and out of the hospital for about two-and-a-half months.
Jack Horn: We believe that this device, when we start using it in its full capacity, is a lot less likely to make an error than a human.
Jennifer Matthews: So far it appears that robot is on the right track. No mistakes have been reported. This is Jennifer Matthews reporting.
