I prefer having some time to by myself when I get home. In my elementary school I had to go to an annoying baby sitting program where the people were over protective and very... well I hated it, more than I would have if I just got to go to my house instead of having some stupid old woman I don't know telling me what to do and being trapped in school for the extra two hours that I was. Now I'm high school and all and I would say that being in the program I was in was worse than being in the actual classes, it was like a small jail that I had to go to everyday before was bailled out by my mom. When I did get to just go home I never had fears, I don't have behavioral problems, and I just enjoyed it a lot more. Anyway, I felt the idea that I HAD to be monitored all the time was insulting to my intelligence.

You can also put your child in school age programming. Its an awesome program for before and after school when your child might not have you around at home. They also work on holidays that children get, that us adults still have to work. If you have never heard of school age programming, look it up on the net, or talk to your kids teachers about the different programs that might suit your familys needs. :)

This was good information although most parents and children know these results of latchkey life. Americans need to share more experiences and suggestions so many will not feel they are struggling with issues 15% or more of us are experiencing.
