The Relationship between GERD and Asthma
Male: I admit back and forth -- actually it’s a study which I think it was about Reflux/GERD and its plain asthma, does it have a play in asthma?
Alfin G. Vicencio: Yeah probably it does. The issue with asthma and gastroesophageal reflux is somewhat complex. Now I don’t want to say that the reflux causes asthma but certainly, reflux can actually cause a lot of symptoms that can be attributed to asthma for example chronic --
Male: Well, in the study, they talk about if you put the kid on -- or a patient on a reflux medicine, it really didn’t change the control of asthma yet many, many doctors do use the reflux medicine. What’s your opinion on that?
Alfin G. Vicencio: I find it to be a lot more useful in some of the younger babies who have chronic symptoms that could be attributed to asthma for example chronic coughing.
Male: The older kids are the group, which should -- we’re talking more like adults probably wouldn’t gain as much as a little baby which we’ve seen refluxes. I think one out of four babies probably regurgitate significantly. I think so. So there’s some justification there.
Alfin G. Vicencio: Yeah, there’s really good justification for putting somebody on reflux medications although I think it’s something that still frequently gets evaluated and somebody whose asthma is poorly controlled.
