The Renewable Energy Industry in Albuquerque

Hello! I’m Bob Frick senior editor at Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. And I’d like to show you why Albuquerque in New Mexico is the number two spot on our 2009 Best Cities list. Let’s start with the new business residential development called Mesa del Sol which roughly translates into sun-baked no man’s land. Right now, it’s mainly just an arid plateau but through the determination of the city’s state and an inspired developer for city Cuvington, Mesa del Sol is attracting whole new industries to Albuquerque including the film industry. It’s based around Albuquerque Studios, the lynchpin, which employs about 3,000 people. A couple of major soloed businesses including the brand new shot solo plant now reside at Mesa del Sol. The city and state core businesses are not just through tax credits and cutting red tape but by hooking them up with the University of New Mexico for RND and employee training and with Sandia National Laboratories. Sandia collaborates with businesses to develop and test new technologies and then reaches Albuquerque with spin off businesses. And Albuquerque has lots of amenities that are just plain cool. The looting is big here and the city’s old town is amazed of shops and restaurants that weave together the city’s many cultures, especially Native American and Hispanic. And finally, if you want more funky taste about Albuquerque, head to the neon-infused strip along Route 66 known as Nobhill.
