I am Steve Turano, welcome to this episode of Body Performance. I am receiving numerous emails from around the world, especially from young people asking, “Steve, how many calories should I be eating a day?” And I cannot just throw up a generalize number, it is too difficult. There are factors involved. A 100 pound woman is not going to need the same amount of calories as 250 pound man.
So there are a lot of different factors, age, sex, your current weight, what you are trying to achieve, your activity levels and so on. If you are really serious about loosing weight or staying in shape, you need to do one thing, buy a calorie book. This will help you determine how much you are eating. Write down what you eat for the next five to six days. It might be a little bit of paying which you can do it.
After that, total up your calories each day and at the end of the week, take an average on how many calories you have eaten. That will give you a general idea of how many calories you are consuming. Now, take a look back of the last three to six months. Have you gain weight, loss weight or stay about the same during this time period. Once you have determined that and determine how much you are eating, now, you can determine what you need to do.
If you are staying about the same, if your weight has not change, you either have to eat a little bit less, exercise a little bit more or combination of the two. If you are gaining weight rapidly or you are loosing weight rapidly then, based on what you want to achieve, you adjust your diet and activity accordingly. This is important. It is like a check book. If you are actually seeing how much weight can I save each month, first thing I will ask you is, how much money do you make? Second thing I will ask you is, how much money do you spend? And the third thing I will ask you is, how much money do you have left over?
Same thing with calories, were you eating, were expanding and then our third answer is, are you currently gaining or loosing weight. That will then determine how much you need to eat, how much you need to exercise. Next time, I am going to talk about what you should be eating. Love your body. I will see you next time.
