Dr. William McCarthy: Any surgery has complications and with bariatric surgery, we are generally dealing with the population. Number one, they are obese, that alone increases complications. Many of these patients also have other underlying problems such as sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension or many of the factors that are associated with obesity. So yes, it is a risk, but one has to weigh that risk against the risk of persisting an obesity of being overweight. And for the most part the studies are showing that it is safer to have the surgery than it is to be morbidly or to have severe weight problems.
