From Washington - According to data released in The White House report, nearly a quarter of adolescents who have been depressed in the past year have used Marijuana compared to 12% of non-depressed teens. With over two million American teens having reported feelings of depression in the last year, many have attempted to self medicate with Marijuana. However, its use may raise the risk of worsening depression or the development of other mental illness.
From Italy - In a study comparing over 60 children with MS to a group of children without it, those with MS were more likely to have a lower IQ and problems with memory and attention. Language difficulties were also noted in about one-third of those with MS. The findings may be related to the fact that the brain is maturing at the time that demyelization is occurring.
And finally, from Hamilton - Beta blockers, a type of blood pressure drug given to patients to reduce heart risks before surgery, may do more harm than good. In a study of over 8,000 patients undergoing surgery unrelated to the heart, researchers found that taking beta blockers resulted in 25% fewer heart attacks, but also resulted in a 33% higher death rate, and twice as many strokes.
