Dr. Susan Sharma: This is Insidermedicine in 60. From Spain - According to research in the Archives of General Psychiatry, SSRIs, a commonly-prescribed class of antidepressants, may be associated with upper GI bleeds. Over 1,300 patients with upper GI bleeding were compared to 10,000 without, and those who were taking SSRIs were 80% more likely to have a bleed. The effect was more pronounced if patients were taking NSAIDs or blood thinners.
From Atlanta - According to a report in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, early childhood nutrition can influence intelligence. Researchers from Emory University followed over 1,300 Guatemalan children for 30 years after some were given early childhood nutritional supplementation. Those on the supplemented diet scored higher on comprehension and cognitive functioning.
From Chicago - The American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending screening for high cholesterol in children as young as two. High LDL and low HDL have been linked to heart disease and abnormal levels may cause blood vessel changes early in life. The association is also recommending switching to low fat milk as early as age one, and the use of cholesterol lowering agents for those as young as eight.
For Insidermedicine in 60, I am Dr. Susan Sharma.
