The Safest Way to Clean Your Ears

Seth: I'm Seth, I'm 25 years old and I live in Prairie Village, Kansas. My question is what would be the safest way for me to clean the wax out of my ears?

Dr. Jess Dhaliwal: Thanks Seth. There is actually no safest way for you to clean out your ear wax. And besides, your wax is a good thing it protects your ears from infection; now, having said that there are some people that form so much wax that it affects their hearing, and those people, we generally recommend that they come and see one of us an ear, nose and throat specialist, we usually clean out their ears every six months or so just to remove that impacted ear wax.

Now, if you're the type of the person that forms really hard ear wax, then there are few things that you can do at home. You could put a couple of drops of mineral oil in your ears and that can soften it up or you can try over the counter your wax softeners. You don't want to try acute tips and you don't want to try ear candling. Anything in your ear can cause damage to your ear drum and so the bottom line is that you shouldn't put anything in your ear that's bigger than your elbow.
