Hello, I’m Steven Phillips host of Great Cocktails.
I’ve been bartending for a long time and by no means do I have a full bar at home. But there are six essential tools I can leave without.
When I’m mixing a cocktail that I’m going to be serving without ice I use a shaker to chill it down. Now there are two types of shakers, a standard shaker like this one here it has a built-in strainer or if you want to look like a pro cap off a pint glass with a tin, and it becomes a Boston shaker.
If you use a Boston shaker you’ll also need a strainer to pour your cocktail into the glass like so.
But you don’t always want to shake a cocktail. If you're mixing a drink over ice you’ll want to use a bar spoon and these are also great for sometimes digging up the olive at the bottom of the glass. Before anything else you want to try.
Now this next tool is very important, it’s the jigger. If you want to pour a perfectly balanced drink every time this baby is your friend. You got three quarters of on ounce on one side and then an ounce and a half on the other.
To avoid dribbling booze all over you bar pick up some of these pour spouts for a less than $5.00. And last but not the least the wine key, it’s like a swish army knife for the bartender. It can pop off bottle caps, it slices off foil and unsqueeze corks. With these six essential bar tools you’ll be slinging drinks with the best of them in no time. Cheers!
