Rebecca Brayton: You may never have tried Curling before but once you do, you will find it's an exciting sport. Hi, I am Rebecca Brayton and welcome to Watchmojo.com and today we are speaking with Guy Hemmings who is the Canadian Ambassador for the sport. If you could describe Curling to someone who has never heard of it, how would you describe it?
Guy Hemmings: Lots of people used to compare it with like playing Chess on ice, because the game is played on ice. There is lots of strategy involved and also lots of skill because, you are going to need a lots of hand and eye coordination, we are going to slide a stone on a piece of ice for around 50 feet long and so you need lots of strategy, lots of skill and also lots of team dynamic, because you work as a team all the time.
Rebecca Brayton: Traditionally, Curling is not necessarily considered an exciting sport. Now, can you tell me why you would disagree with that?
Guy Hemmings: Well, I think, it's changing. I think that the rule of Curling have changed over the last of 15-20 years. We have put the time clock on the game to make it faster and I think, if you look at the T.V. rating right now, over last of 10-15 years, the rating is getting higher and higher. So, the people recognize the excitement about it. All the combination, the angle they could play with a stone, and how they are playing, and in the high level, obviously, the Curlers are getting better and better over the years, like many other sport. So, the percentage of shots is higher, so making it way more exciting than it used to be.
Rebecca Brayton: Why is good sportsmanship such an important part of this sport?
Guy Hemmings: Traditionally, it's a sport for gentleman, we used to call it. Both team shake hand before the game and shake hand after. Most of time, we play the games in clubs without having any umpire on. People respect the rule all the time, and you know we have some rules, and the people will respect the rule, if they make a mistake, they will be the first one to raise their hands, they are like touched the stone, for example and respect your opponent, because when your opponent is shooting, for example, you stand on the side, a bit like you were do in Golf. When guy is about to drive, you don't stand in front and move and talk, you try to give him the respect and Curling is about the same.
