The Susceptibility of Autistic People to Diseases

—that’s a great question, children with autism and autism spectrum disorders have difficulty communicating when they’re ill. Even adults with even more severe forms of autism have difficulty communicating so if they’re sick, it's often hard for them to tell you what the problem is and they just as may appear irritable or be having behavioral problems. But children and adults with autism are just like the rest of us in terms of their susceptibility to most other diseases, in other words they’re no more susceptible to cancers or other problems.

However there are other conditions that are associated with autism but a very related to the syndrome itself. For example epilepsy, children at very young ages and in teenage years are more susceptible to having seizures and epilepsy. They’re also more susceptible to having sleep disorder which is very common and possibly even some gastrointestinal disturbances that are at this point not that well characterized but in terms of disorder, serious disorders like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, there’s really no difference between children or adult with autism in the general population that we know off.
