(Bell ringing) G: My name is G, age 26. And I want to know what the symptoms of Juvenile Diabetes are? And what test can be taken to verify? Anna Haddal: G, it’s a very important question because Juvenile Diabetes also known as Type I Diabetes can be recognized based on symptoms. In this type of diabetes, insulin is not made by the body. So, this hormone is important for maintaining normal sugar levels. When the hormone is missing, sugars are very high. The kidney needs to get rid of these sugars. So, it takes water out from the body in order to get rid of it. And what happens is that the patient has increased thirst and increased urination. Also, glucose is missing as a fuel. So, the cells start using fat for fuel. And this is why patients lose weight and feel very hungry. Additional, they may also have changes in their mood and their energy level. Test available for diagnosing Juvenile Diabetes include measuring sugar in the blood and in the urine.
