Shalom, this video is trying to talk about the various views of enjoyment of the world. There are basically 3 views known to our Jews and to other people in the world. One is asceticism which sees any enjoyment a physical world to be unworthy and bad and to be as stewed and avoided if it all possible. That abscedent is a virtue. The second view we could called the count pure thanical view were it is rejects all the enjoyment of the physical world as it end in itself.
The physical pleasure are somewhat unworthy but it is recognizes that they are danger in purely acidic life. In the third, basically the view that the physical rule was giving to us is a gift of the creator to enjoy. Now, there are problems and excess of that regard so we have Jewish law the Halakah to kind of provide fence around our enjoyment of the physical world.
We have a statement at the Talmud that says that anybody who has the opportunity and the ability and with in the law to enjoy the world was not to pay the consequences. Now this is not to say that we are not Jews or Acidic and have the pure thanical view they certainly were but the main line basic thamuted view was a great full acceptance. However, that not the whole story, they were definitely sages who were more in acidic and pure thanical side for example, Rabbi Jude of the prince, the great save of the Talmud. Supposedly said the death bad as he rise his ten fingers and declare to god it is revealed to you, I have not enjoyed the pleasure of this world even with my little finger. So there is definitely great sage who was a self denying. But no where in the Rabbinical literature do we find the advocacy of ascetic eccentric which in danger the health. Now in the middle ages there was a group of Jews called Asideaschunage the saints of Germany, German mystiques who were ascetics and even practice mortification of the flesh which is hardly to believe that we seen now that was either influenced by Christian Monasticism of that period.
Remember this contexts we have the notion of monks of various cultures who meant celebrate who renounce worldly pleasure and that definitely is a more pronounced attitude in the Christian tradition than anywhere in Jewish tradition. And also among Cabalist a good deal of emphasis is static practices. They were fraying from food or drinking not for various time. They were safe off the ashes, they would fast often but the Casinum basically is a reaction to that even thought the are cabalist too by at large reject of that most of the ascetic Rabbi’s and Saudics. Sadikim they enjoyed life and they drank and they danced and they understood. That with in the bounce of the Jewish law you should enjoy life. So the sum up, Asceticism is not unknown in the Judaism and some of the great Jewish teacher did follow an ascetic way of life.
However, in the majority in modern impetration of Judaism Asceticism is rejected. So would not find the celebrations\ of somebody of committing to a life of single life, no children and no enjoyment of the world. And one day we really do this as Yam Kippur we set aside one day to live this way and turn our selves totally to god but the other 364 days we have a more balanced attitude.
