The Warning Signs of Appendicitis
Dr. Travis Stork: What I want to show everyone is quite simply in the ER -- what I’m most worried about. If you put one finger on your belly button, the other is on the pelvis, in the front here. You draw and imaginary line, two-thirds of the way down, there is something we called the McBurney’s point. If you press, you’ll see us as ER doctors doing this all the time -- if that is your area of maximum tenderness, very likely to be appendicitis.
What’s happening is that’s where your appendix lives. I want you to look at this animation and your appendix can sometimes get clogged up with what we call fecalith, which is stool, and it could become angry and inflamed and infected. So in the first 24 hours, as that process develops, you may have specific pains, and nausea, and then usually it does become more specific to this area, the reason it needs to get checked out and removed surgically is it can burst, and then that creates a whole host of other issues.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: A lot of problems in women too.
Dr. Travis Stork: And every common obviously as kids are getting a little bit older to get this pain and need their appendix out, but a very common and successful surgery.
