Three Favorite Trees & Shrubs That Bloom In April

[Music Playing] David Epstein: You know in addition to perennials flowering in early spring; there are some great trees and shrubs that do some great flowering. One of the favorite ones of many of you out there is Forsythia. It is an early blooming plant and we have got a nice Friday Forsythia here. This is a Lynwood Gold; just taking a look at the tag, and that is a beautiful shade of yellow. We are going to take a look at some other ones and for that we got to get Wayne Mezitt and we are going to talk about some other early flowering trees and shrubs. Alright, so we brought Wayne in, we have talked about these early flowering shrubs. Wayne, what is this plant that we have here? Wayne Mezitt: This is a Brower’s beauty Papyrus. It is a hybrid between Japanese and the Native American Papyrus form under and it is really good for this region and for most of the cold areas because it is a tough plant, it does not get too big. David Epstein: And these are the flower tassels and they will come out when? Wayne Mezitt: They will come out in April, it is one of the early blooming plants, it is the winner of Carry awards, it states in the label here. David Epstein: What is the Carry Award? Wayne Mezitt; Well, the Carry award recognizes plants that are good from New England. David Epstein: Okay. Wayne Mezitt: It is the most northern award that I know for a plant. David Epstein: So, if it is hardly in New England, it is going to be harder in other places. Wayne Mezitt: You can tell by looking at the zone number. David Epstein: Okay. Wayne Mezitt: And if it is zone five, zone four, it will work. David Epstein: Great. What are some of the other plants that are flowering in this time of the year that we want to look for? Well, of course shrubs. Wayne Mezitt: Of course Scythia? David Epstein: Yes. Wayne Mezitt: And of course, along with the Scythia, there is a yellow flowered one called Carnelian Cherry, corn as mask, it is a dogwood. David Epstein: Yes? Wayne Mezitt: But it looks like; for almost of Carnelian Cherry, this is a bright yellow flower, it is a very early in the year. David Epstein: And how tall will that get? Wayne Mezitt: I think it will be about 15 feet tall, and it can be grown as a shrub or a tree. A very attractive in the fall too, there is a good red berries in September they are edible. David Epstein: So it is two, as in great two, two seasons of interest for that when it is a tree in the summer. Wayne Mezitt: It is a Carry Award winner too. David Epstein: Terrific. Wayne Mezitt: Yes. David Epstein: Bye, thanks. Wayne Mezitt: You are welcome. David Epstein: Great thing to do, look around your yard, find the place for one of these early spring flowering trees or shrubs. You can extend the season that way, now what you have things flowering very early will be talking throughout the year about things that will flower real late as well. [Music Playing]
