Female: Okay so you are just so over those parties for Christmas, New Years, and even Saint Patrick’s Day. And now, it is time to mix things up a little bit. May 5th is Sinco De Mayo and joining us now is some great tips on planning a fun fiesta is Maria McBride she is the author of the party basics for New Nesters, welcome to the show.
Maria: Olla.
Female: Yeah, Olla, thank you Sinco De Mayo is a huge holiday now?
Maria: It is very popular in the United States we celebrate it. You know, I mean there are, so many of us that have Latin culture. I am a Guatemalan, my mother is Guatemalan, raised in a big family, and every day is fiesta. Sinco De Mayo was a great one to break of the color in extra special.
Female: Extra special and speaking of color you brought it out here to look at the linens. You said to have a great Sinco De Mayo party, you got to bring out a lot of color.
Maria: Layer the color it does not--and you know and you do not have to shop anywhere special just go looking for bright tones and layer them reds, pinks, oranges, greens.
Female: The more the better right?
Maria: The more the better.
Female: Okay.
Maria: Make it chaotic.
Female: Chaotic let as go with the flowers now. The flowers are not as chaotic they are beautiful but they are less expensive obvious than a paper.
Maria: Well paper flowers it is a Mexican tradition to making these paper flowers, this is tissue paper you pleat it, put a little floral wire together and then pleat open. I used it for napkin rings. I use it for floral center
Female: Right a big--huge arrangement there.
Maria: You can tie them together make garlands. They are very versatile.
Female: And you have also another version of the flower to the floating flowers?
Maria: Floating flowers is a great way to get a lot mileage for your dollar cut the flowers off with this stem. At the neck ant the neck of a flower and float them in water and it makes it really vibrant centerpiece.
Female: A lot of colors too, so you are sticking with the theme here too.
Maria: I am mixing it up.
Female: Let us go out to the back yard. You can not forget the backyard when it comes to decoration right.
Maria: Well, it is summer time and Sinco De Mayo kick off—you know the party in New York. These little beautiful net bags are great they can hang very easily from the branches. Put a glass in there fill it up with a little bit of water and float the candle and it is a beautiful way--
Female: You just hang them from the trees.
Maria: Hang them from the branches.
Female: I love it. Now, you got to have something to drink. We are going to the food a in just a second but the drink here--what is this?
Maria: This is the food in a drink glass. I like things that you can get more than one use out of it. So, here is a martini glass filled with salad and I call it a salsa tiny. And you stock them up and it makes a great use of your buffet it is a very theatrical put a little fork in there so people can serve them selves
Female: Exactly.
Maria: It is a great look
Female: And last but not the least, you have something to drink, you have a couple of options here.
Maria: Same great drinks. A little spike chocolate ice chocolate is great you know the Mexican look of the chocolate is very important to the culture. So, it is a very excellent drink to serve. Margaritas of course, you know I mean it is the great essential drink for the fiesta. Wrap it with some colorful ribbons. So, you set off your picture. Rim your glass with a little bit if salt and do not forget the lime to give it a little kick.
Female: And then last but not the least, if you do not want that, you can always go with the old favorite, the Corona, right?
Maria: Just put it mini-bottles and make it obviously Mexican beer, which we want to serve.
Female: Yes, they will love it. Maria thank you got t leave all of this for us, right.
Maria: Just have some fun.
Female: Thank so much for joining us Maria you got to pick up the book it is called Party Basics for New Nester.
