(Music playing)
Today I am going to talk about the thumb positioning in Cello. When Cellos get up high, we start activating out thumb which allows us to sort of use it like a capo on a guitar but we are able to sort of stop these strings and as we move our finger up, the pitch gets higher and higher. Thinks in a little while you can see if you look at my thumb you get bombs in it and once you develop the strength of your fingers it becomes a very comfortable position to play in and it allows us to. We start off at the harmonic area.

This is like if you cut the string in half you can actually touch very lightly.
(Demo)
And make a nice sound. It is the same sound if you push down right there. So when we start learning this position we always start there and we work by.
(Demo)
The D major scale and then eventually when this gets some tune and you feel comfortable we take the harmonic and press worth in them.
(Demo)
And we slide it up a half set. Now, I am forced to push down as you can see my thumb is on both strings.
(Demo)
Moving the thumb out of that position which we have to force the strings down.
(Demo)
When we are playing this position, it is also good to think about being on the inside of the string, inside I mean this part of the string this way because if we do not, it is very for the stopping.
(Demo)
Where the fingers kind of slide off the side of the string.
(Demo)
That is the sample right there.
(Demo)
And that is the way most Cellos play, they usually play in thumb position and this is the position we like to use because it gives us a lot of the pyrotechniques that we need to sound like flashy musician to play the flashy sound. It is actually not the hardest things in the world to do but it sounds very impressive to other people. That is when the thumb position comes in.
