So how do you make outdoor entertaining easy and not break the bank?
Phyllis Bowie: Nan! I have some easy, wonderful, great ideas for entertainment outside.
Nan Kelley: Bring it on Phyllis.
Phyllis Bowie: It starts with using what you already have. For an instance, lemons, this is a decorative item bright beautiful color that you already have in your kitchen. You probably have a bucket lying around somewhere. Once again just use what you already have. This could be a great centerpiece.
Nan Kelley: Sure!
Phyllis Bowie: And then afterwards --
Nan Kelley: You can have lemonade for three weeks.
Phyllis Bowie: There you go!
Nan Kelley: Perfect!
Phyllis Bowie: How is that?
Nan Kelley: I love that.
Phyllis Bowie: I like that multifunctional item. The next thing is bringing outside what you already have indoors, for instance right now I bought this area rug.
Nan Kelley: This was inside.
Phyllis Bowie: Yes. It defines the area. Now remember this is just for entertaining.
Nan Kelley: This is temporary.
Phyllis Bowie: This is not the decoration outside, this is just temporary. Green multicolor defines the area.
Nan Kelley: It softens the stones. Perfect!
Phyllis Bowie: Absolutely, same thing with the pillows.
Nan Kelley: That is great.
Phyllis Bowie: This are so pretty and cheerful just a puff of color, wonderful. Just make the space a little more intimate.
Nan Kelley: And define.
Phyllis Bowie: And defines the space.
Nan Kelley: Perfect!
Phyllis Bowie: Okay. Repurposing, repurposing means taking something and using it in a different way than it was attended.
Nan Kelley: Recycling and designing lingos. I love that.
Phyllis Bowie: Exactly! So this is my best one. I love this. What does this look like to you?
Nan Kelley: That is a floor tile.
Phyllis Bowie: A floor tile. It comes in marble, granite and get it, whatever. I could felt feet on them, right? And you can use them as a mat. You can use them to put food on to service a buffet.
Nan Kelley: A tribit
Phyllis Bowie: A trbit, exactly.
Nan Kelley: A good idea.
Phyllis Bowie: And you put the foot on so it does not scratch any surface you can easily move it around.
Nan Kelley: Serve cheese and crackers on this.
Phyllis Bowie: Totally.
Nan Kelley: Clean it and wipe it off.
Phyllis Bowie: And do that. Wonderful!
Nan Kelley: Great idea.
Phyllis Bowie: And we are out of spur so it is totally natural.
Nan Kelley: Very good.
Phyllis Bowie: This same thing.
Nan Kelley: That is a wall tile.
Phyllis Bowie: That is right.
Nan Kelley: You put feet on that.
Phyllis Bowie: You put feet on that.
Nan Kelley: Coaster.
Phyllis Bowie: Coaster! And so you just coordinate your colors and this is easy and inexpensive. Once again, repurposing. You probably have this around. It has a beautiful color, I love the color, but this is actually the drain tray of a pot.
Nan Kelley: A flower pot.
Phyllis Bowie: A flower pot and they come in different sizes or different colors. So I just pick up the drain, we might even have it in the garage or something and you can use this also a coaster of the candles.
Nan Kelley: Perfect!
Phyllis Bowie: Is that not wonderful.
Nan Kelley: Little candles/
Phyllis Bowie: Little candles. Even if you have candles that are not in T-lights, put a little bit of water in here.
Nan Kelley: So they will not stick. Great idea.
Phyllis Bowie: All this stuff is easy. You already have it.
Nan Kelley: Sure.
Phyllis Bowie: And you can reuse them. Okay, this -- I love this now, these are the new poly made non breakable use for outdoor glassware.
Nan Kelley: Perfect!
Phyllis Bowie: But it is plastic so -- which -- if you --
Nan Kelley: Drop it. You do not have to worry about it.
Phyllis Bowie: No problem. And I love how the design of it now. They have really nice designs and it looks --
Nan Kelley: It looks like glass.
Phyllis Bowie: It looks like glass. Put a nice lemon punch or lemonade in it, citrus punch, beautiful.
Nan Kelley: Delicious.
Phyllis Bowie: Now, here is something that I was thinking of. This -- I love this, I love anything were you can add things so it is a great idea and very inspirational. Now -- help me with this.
Nan Kelley: So these are just --
Phyllis Bowie: I happen to like -- they are just marbles. But you may have with your flowering stuff, right.
Nan Kelley: Or like a candle escaping in time.
Phyllis Bowie: Right. And then you just put this in here and then you have got a candle. But you know, as I am doing this, remember one of my principles which is luxury consciousness --
Nan Kelley: Something that you love.
Phyllis Bowie: Something that you love, okay. We could put --
Nan Kelley: What?
Phyllis Bowie: Shells.
Nan Kelley: Or beach sand from your trip to Hawaii.
Phyllis Bowie: Free, easy, it reminds you of your trip or even your children’s little cars or treks.
Nan Kelley: Collectable airplanes, little things.
Phyllis Bowie: Something they love. Also little rocks --
Nan Kelley: That is a great idea.
Phyllis Bowie: That you actually pick up. Once again, really easy, are you noticing this? We have to talk about this.
Nan Kelley: What is this?
Phyllis Bowie: Once again, repurposing. Pick this up -- for you. This is a mirrored wall top. Put the feet on it, just the same way, so inexpensive.
Nan Kelley: And that is your centerpiece.
Phyllis Bowie: And this is a centerpiece. And it illuminates with the candles.
Nan Kelley: So you really do not have to go out and spend a lot of money, just walk into your home and let your mind open up.
Phyllis Bowie: Stress free. You know, we have not do this and it could all go crazy when people are coming, make it easy and do not spend that much money.
Nan Kelley: So when life gives you lemons.
Phyllis Bowie: What do you do?
Nan Kelley: Decorate with them.
Phyllis Bowie: Absolutely.
Paint can give you a new style to old furniture, while inexpensive fabrics can be used to create colorful chair covers and table runners that unify your space. Tie flowers around your napkins for an easy and colorful napkin ring.
Nan Kelley: After working hard this looks so refreshing Phyllis.
Phyllis Bowie: Well, you know, it goes with our whole theme of being outdoors and tropical and refreshing, this is a citrus punch, really easy to make but I want you to kind of help out a little bit, so squeeze a little bit of orange, I will squeeze a little bit of lemon in this one, we are going to do orange, lemon and lime.
Nan Kelley: Perfect! And using your colors, continuing the theme.
Phyllis Bowie: Once again the bright refreshing colors that sometimes you might feel because you only have one drink that you are not really giving the attention to your guests as you like. Well, you come out with those small touches that you can do ahead of time.
Nan Kelley: What is that?
Phyllis Bowie: I have sliced lemons and limes and put them in an ice tray and this goes on top of each individual glass.
Nan Kelley: And your thread of using the lemons for decoration using the lemons for the beverages and using the lemons inside the ice cubes.
Phyllis Bowie: Absolutely, and that let your guest know that, okay, this is the most special. Easy, easy, and the other thing is -- and you see we have two pitchers.
Nan Kelley: Yes.
Phyllis Bowie: One of them for our wonderful kids that are growing and so pure and wonderful. The other one is a spirited one for the adults. Now, you might want to think when you mix a little bit, how much of the vodka should you put in? I say to taste. Usually I just taste it and make sure that it is not too much or whatever is to your liking.
Nan Kelley: One without vodka for the children.
Phyllis Bowie: Yes. One labeled spirited.
Nan Kelley: For the adults.
Phyllis Bowie: For the adults.
Nan Kelley: Or it is in to your taste.
Phyllis Bowie: Right. And speaking of tasting --
Nan Kelley: Shall we?
Phyllis Bowie: Oh! Yes. Is this the adult one?
Nan Kelley: What do you think?
Phyllis Bowie: I think it is?
Nan Kelley: Give it a taste.
Phyllis Bowie: All right.
Nan Kelley: Here is to easy entertaining.
Phyllis Bowie: Here is to easy entertaining.
[Music Playing]
Nan Kelley: Well, the last step before the guest arrive I was --
Phyllis Bowie: And you know once again, what is our common thing, easy.
Nan Kelley: You have done it. This food looks amazing. What did you prepare tonight?
Phyllis Bowie: Okay, so we have scallops on a stick, so pick up and go. Scallops have been marinated in a little bit of olive oil, a little bit of paragon. You also have the jumbo pawns and they have been marinating in olive oil and paragon. We have for the children, little drummets, they could just eat with their hands. They have been marinated in a teriyaki and we are brush out a really nice sweet sauce for the kids. And then we have big drums for the adults with the spicy sweet sauce.
Nan Kelley: An I saw, you have some vegetables, I can put this on the last.
Phyllis Bowie: Once again, color, I love the color. So we have red peppers, we have orange peppers and yellow peppers. And then we also have a mixed green salad with strawberries on the top and walnuts, just once you keep it easy and fresh. And all you do is lay that out in a platter. And have everybody serve themselves.
Nan Kelley: I tell you what, you have left me in great shape because the guest are arriving shortly and I cannot thank you enough, everything looks fabulous, you have done an awesome and now you have to go on.
Phyllis Bowie: Yes.
Nan Kelley: You are welcome to stay but other people need your help. Thank you so much.
Phyllis Bowie: Thank you.
Use wood chips in some grills to help add flavor to food, spread coles evenly for direct grilling. Use indirect grilling for thick cuts of meat. Food may continue to cook after he take it off the grill, so plan ahead.
Nan Kelley: Okay! Our food is cooking, the drinks are mixed and our patio looks --
