Sherry: During the cold winter and hot summer months, many Canadian homeowners are looking for ways to save on their heating and cooling bills. Chris Adamkowski is an energy efficiency expert with Owens Corning Canada and says a lot of Canadians feel they are spending too much when it comes to heating or cooling their homes.
Chris: Upgrading insulation and ceiling leaks is a cost effective way to help improve a home’s energy efficiency. By creating a well insulated home, you help reduce your heating and cooling costs.
Sherry: When it comes to improving the energy efficiency of your home start with your attic and work from the top down.
Chris: Rising energy prices mean increased heating and cooling cost for homeowners. By increasing the amount of insulation in your attic you can help reduce these costs. Attic insulation should be at least 12 inches thick to help increase energy efficiency.
Once you have checked the attic, you want to make sure that other areas of your home such as cross bases or rooms above the garage are well insulated. Pink fiber glass and pink foam insulation can help increase comfort and decrease energy usage.
Do not forget to check the basement. It is important that basements be well insulated to help control heat loss.
Sherry: When assessing your home remember that if air can leak in and out of your house so can heat.
Chris: It is very important to reduce air leakage in a home especially around windows, doors, and basement headers. Large cracks can be filled using paint fiberglass insulation sealed with construction too and for small cracks use sealant.
