First thing, what are the main risks of the internet?
Jacques Viau: Identity theft now is really present on the internet. Organized crime has interested and all kinds of identity; credit cards, home, date of birth.
Rebecca Britain: How can we be certain that we are safe on the internet?
Jacques Viau: You can never be really certain, a 100% then that’s you know—that is the fact today because technology evolves so rapidly. You’re vulnerable with these come out every now and then. This year we’re going to have about 8,000 new phone numbers on there software and hardware. The best thing is to know—to learn about your technology, your applications.
One of the other things that people do not care enough about is the wireless access ones. You buy a wireless access point. You install it. You connect it and it works but it’s more than that. You got to read the instructions and you got to be careful of the way you set it up.
Rebecca Britain: Is it every safe to give our credit card number online?
Jacques Viau: It’s like when you go on shop in real life. You know what kind of business you’re dealing with. You can see that’s nice, plain, that they have real people, a real store. On internet, it’s a bit different. All the interfaces are great. So you got to take other measures to insure that it’s a real business. You got to be really careful about the way you find information on the companies you’re going to deal.
Rebecca Britain: What should you do when you found out that someone has gotten your information online?
Jacques Viau: Report it to the police. That is the first thing. The other thing would be to advise the credit companies like Equifax and TransUnion, so they can put a flag on your name. So if anybody asked for credit or if there is any transactions that need to be checked, they will advice you and you will know right away. They will put the stop to that.
