Tom Tom Go 920 GPS - Tech Review
Well today I wanted to take a look at another GPS unit, this one is from Tom Tom, it’s called the Go 920, one of the things I want to say right off the bat is I like the version of this because it’s designed with a stylistic design. Let’s face it; these things are in the $600.00, $700.00 range, so the people who are going to buy them are going to put them into really nice looking cars. So it’s nice when it can match, you can see with my own vehicle here, it matches really nicely with that chrome accent.
One of the things we’ll do is we’ll just mount it to the desktop or through the windshield right away and just click onto the screen and the idea here is that while you’re driving and you want to get directions, you just mount it right onto your little screen there. Let’s talk about some of the things I like right away. First of all, with the GPS device, you really want to make sure that whenever you decide to choose you light the navigation feature. That will make sense to you in terms of how to put the addresses and stuff like that. Let’s take a look at how this one works, first of all, we’ve seen Tom Tom before and I’ll go back to that in a few minutes but right off the bat, I like the easy navigation.
I want to navigate to a certain place, maybe I want to find an alternative route to my current navigation in case the bridges are closed or something like that. Check this two feature out one is mobile phone. I think the ability to actually pair this with my own mobile phone, which means that using Bluetooth I can take advantage of a few different things. Right off the bat, I can actually download different maps using the data device in this so that I can get updated information. Also, you can take advantage of other services like Tom Tom traffic and Tom Tom weather, that way if you want to, you can actually get information about what streets might be congested to help to plan a better route.
But let’s take a look at the other screen here, which is help me. Well help me is kind of cool because if you go into that you can actually right away just choose I want to drive to help, maybe my car broke down, I want to walk to help, you can also phone help. Meaning what it’s going to do is its going to find the nearest hospital, the nearest emergency line, the nearest gas station if you will and it will give you the addresses and the phone numbers of those things that you can quickly get help. And that’s a great idea, just a few other guides in here like your firs aid guide and stuff like that as well, so that yo can get important firm information in the situations that you’re in. But we’re not in trouble right now, so why don’t we just go back to navigate, if I just show you on the navigate screen a few different things illustrate forward points of interest like a park that I want to go in a nearby location or recent destination. Somewhere we already put it but let’s go to addresses, I don’t put the address in that we’re going to.
Well, right off the bat, we can go to city center, we can go to street, cross section, I want to go to Spoken Address because this actually has the ability to listen to my voice and actually choose an address, so let put that one in there. Toronto, as you can see it came back with a few different options, number one, King Street West. One, six, zero, zero, done, perfect, well it just gave us the exact directions to one of my favorite private media clubs downtown Toronto, so there you. It’s that simple, I can just speak it, now you’re not supposed to operate GPS devices while you’re driving the vehicle. But let’s face it, for those of you who kind of break those rules, its nice to have the fact that you can speak to it rather than trying to touch it and you can hear it just to ask me to avoid tollbooths, which is a great thing. I’m pretty cheap, so I’m going to say lets avoid tollbooths and then it recalculates my trip based on not going through any toll routes.
One of the other things to mention here, it has the ability to actually use the built in speakers to talk to it or you can use what's called the FM transmitter feature and you might be familiar with this well with things like iPods. I can actually have it tuned into my radio so that all the instructions come into nice speakers built into my automobile. Again making it a more robust and more sort of an executive feeling navigation system because it isn’t built into the vehicle, it’s an extra add on but you can still take advantage of some of those things.
One of the reasons I eluded you in the beginning that you’ve seen Tom Tom before because I actually have the mobile version of Tom Tom, programmed into my mobile phone. Which is another cool thing and that’s why I like it. When I get out of the vehicle I can either take that unit with me or I can simply use Tom Tom built into my mobile phone, pretty cool, definitely worth checking out.
