Tony Keck Teaches Touch Techniques with Careless Love
[Demonstration]
Okay, that was Careless Love covered by a lot of different Blues artist, a great song. First thing we got to take a look at is the rhythm that I was using. Kind of similar to, if you notice the C chord, which ends up being a movable shape as you can tell. Take a look and see like what we played before in C, Careless Love, we’re playing in D. And we could move it in different key’s if we wanted to but let's take a look here. So, that’s what I was doing, as far as the rhythm and then this variation using the same notes.
Now let's take a look at the melody. Let's see what the right hands doing here a second. Notice what I did there, I did a bang. It's like a half note, half step down. So, the first part and that was like a little double stop run there. It kind of chromatically goes right down to these notes here. And often times it will do to is slide in and out of notes, it just seems to give it a little bit more personality, that’s what I did there. So, let's check that little run there against the rhythm. You could probably go up with that as well. In this case, we’re going down like that. So, let's take a look at the song as a whole and just break it down.
Doing the same rhythm there and that’s pretty neat there, check that out, it feels a little triad. Back down with that run. So you know what, the cool thing about the style is all different possibilities you can use. I mean you can place single note stuff, double note things or triads, just a lot of interesting possibilities. And as far as improvising, you can take and use the pentatonic scale, like what we’ve learned in the key of C. Now, I moved up to the key of D, so it ends up being like a slide rule. So, this scale and all its related positions if you wanted to improvise all of them, positions are available to you.
So, let's just kind of check out a little on how you might improvise using part of this scales here. Also besides bending, again the slides are such a cool thing you can do with these, so slides, bends, infinite possibilities. Another possibility is the use of this parallel voice-ins and check this idea. So, use your imagination, practice and work on the stuff or you can come up with some pretty interesting ideas. So, I'm going to play it slow through one time and we can play it together.
