Too Busy To Cook

Tim Bratcher: My name is Tim Bratcher and I am a Commercial Finance Attorney. When we have a number of deals going on at one time, the stress can be overwhelming. And we are preserving that's all in the record. Shouldn't we ask them to just simply identify the one? Food, what from being something that I really cared about to something that was totally utilitarian and something that I was grabbed wherever I could, whenever I could. Can I have a number five of the coke please? And the result is I've just lived the last 15 years on fast food and peanut butter. I've been going to the doctor. My doctor have been saying, your cholesterol is high, your cholesterol high. It was one time he told me, look, you are in the stroke heart attack range, you've got to bring this down. If I can do it through diet and exercise, I really want to do it, I have to change. I am motivated to change. I just don't really know how to be quite honest. Carolyn O'Neil: Hi. Tim Bratcher: Hello, how are you? Carolyn O'Neil: Tim, I am Carolyn O'Neil and I am a Registered Dietitian. I understand you would like to improve your diet, so I am here to help. Tim, of course has a very high power job. He doesn't spend a lot of time at home. So when he comes home, food preparation is not sound happy like la la la. Open up a cook book and see what I can dream up, it is survival. For you, we were looking at cholesterol management. I am looking at the most important thing here, it is dietary fiber, okay. Dietary fiber is the kind of fiber that's important for cholesterol lowering. Tim Bratcher: Well, to be quite honest, I was a little bit embarrassed to see her go through all my stuff and to know that I was completely sub par in every respect. Carolyn O'Neil: Anyway you can cut down on saturated fat and you're doing that here. I am glad that you like the fat free milk. There are healthy fats and there are unhealthy fats. You can see it says, partially hydrogenated soy bean oil. Partially hydrogenated is a clue in the fine print that beans may contain some trans fats. And trans fats are the fat you want to stay away from. So I've kind of did a little contract agreement for Tim, by Tim. Tim Bratcher: I Tim Bratcher ready to make reasonable efforts to improve my eating habits. I understand that hamburgers and French fries may call my name from time to time and tempt me back towards the pattern of unhealthy eating habits, but I will learn how to enjoy these foods in moderation and with some healthy new twists. Outstanding. Carolyn O'Neil: Let's go shopping. Well, I see excitement and adventure in opportunity, he sees barriers, so that's why we have to get through that and find these entry points. I want to introduce you to the world of tree cuts, fruits and vegetables. They are a little bit more expensive per pound but guess what, two things happen, they are easy to get to, so you can eat them. Tim Bratcher: Right. Carolyn O'Neil: And because you eat them, less of it goes to waist. Tim Bratcher: I go up and down in the aisle, I see these guys in the grocery store and they are buying very discrete items because you know they are making a meal that not. The problem is, I don't know what I am suppose to get, I don't want know what I am suppose to cook. Carolyn O'Neil: Now this is a huge slab of salmon. Now salmon is one of the dish that has your omega 3 fatty acids that we talked about that. Actually, it's very heart healthy. Salmon, one of the best things you can eat today. You can cut it into the portions. You can enjoy, wrap them individually, put them in the freezer. Olive oil, you should probably heard, it's one of the good fats. Tim Bratcher: Alright Carolyn O'Neil: Alright. This is extra virgin olive oil and then just classic olive oil. Tim Bratcher: Right, what about extra light? Carolyn O'Neil: And then there is extra light. You know, that actually has to do with taste, not calories. Believe it or not, he was ready to learn. I think the key is to find foods that somebody likes and take them from the familiar to the unfamiliar. Potato chips today in most major brands are now trans fat free. So you got a great start, we have some of the foods you already like but kind of upgraded them. Tim Bratcher: Right. Carolyn O'Neil: Found some that will give you a little bit more of the active ingredients, the insoluble fiber for instance in the cereal. Tim Bratcher: She showed me how to eliminate these bad things from my diet, not by having to drastically change everything about what I do, but just by being more conscious about making selections.
