Tools Needed to Build a Solar Panel
Hi this is Greg Peterson creator of the video series 12 things we must know before building a solar panel.
One question people asked me about my homemade solar panels is what tools will I need? You’re going to need a few basic tools but nothing fancy so don’t get too stressed out. For building a frame you’ll need some hand tools like a saw on a drill, if you have access to a shop with power tools that’s great this will be do and quicker for you than the rest of us. If you don’t have access to a woodshop, don’t worry about it but you will need at least the hand saw and a drill for cutting through both wood and plexiglass.
Another tool you’re going to need is a soldering iron. You will use the soldering iron to connect all the solar cells together. You can pick this up at a radio shack or online and they usually add them starting at around $10.00 and up. I’d recommend not getting the cheapest one though I use the cheapest soldering iron for a while and when I switch to a nicer one I really can’t believe how much quicker it work.
You’re going to be doing a lot of soldering so do yourself a favor and spend a little more money you’ll be glad you did. If you don’t know how to use a soldering iron it’s really easy you can look up how the solder on YouTube and I’m sure you’ll be and expert within just a few minutes.
The last tool you’ll need is the caulking gun which you will use to silk in the cells down as well as seal up the whole panel. They have home Depot and you can usually get one for under $5.00 box they’re really cheap. As far as tools go that’s all you really need building a solar panel is fairly quick and one’s you understand the basic design you could put one together pretty easily in just a weekend.
