Leila Lemghalef: Author Kim Klein has taught fund rising in 21 countries and founded the Grassroots Fundraising Journal in 1981. Her specialty involves adapting traditional fund raising techniques particularly major donor campaigns to the needs of organizations with small budgets, looking for social justice.
Kim Klein: I think organization has obligation to it, diversify their funding and make sure that if anybody or any source of funding several that when one are funding you anymore, the organization gets say, well we’re sorry missed you. But they can continue to do there work.
Leila Lemghalef: Organizations easily get into the habit of getting government money or foundation funding. But these forms of revenue are very uncertain. What happens when someone else get selected and should this is tax cuts and the money goes away or the stock market jobs along with foundation funding.
Kim Klein: You will a lot of organization there, they’re have budget as one year and small budgets and big and small don’t get it smaller, smaller, smaller and they lay off people and they don’t serve a society productively.
Leila Lemghalef: Welcome to watchmojo.com, I’m your host Leila. I asked Kim Klein what 10 things we should know about how to raise funds in uncertain times.
Kim Klein: Be very clear about your costs. You have to be willing to ask for money. You need to keep in mind that people are giving away there money and they’re either going to be give it to you or they are going to give it somewhere else. The 7 out of 10 people do with money, they’re going to give it away. And you get four thing is you need the group of people to help you; you cannot do it by yourself. You know that’s a nature of organization and if you can’t finally want to help you. You have to think to yourself because anyone else cares about this. And you got fifth thing is ones you get a donation is to be sure to thank people and to be grateful and to be appreciative and to keep track of our people.
The six things you know send people information about how you doing it, if you send emails, on the newsletter let them knows there gifts made a difference. Some thing would be the best person to ask for money is someone who just give you money, that’s the person most likely they give you money and people are no, no, she already gave, I’m never going to ask her again but if you think of churches, I often what church is that. I mean it got used of down right away in 52 times a year so we really want to ask over and over. But every time we asks we are like thank you so much what you did already could you help us again. So, you know, in the people can help those will say no. and that would be the eight things, none of us can give money. No matter how often we are we cannot money to all the groups than they are support. So, we are not going to say no so some of them we want to he gracious when people say yes and we want to be really gracious when they say no. we always see in fantasying no is short for not now. I don’t have the money now, I don’t care enough now, and I’m busy now.
Over the nine things would be to be gracious about other groups. I mean, kind to know your group is really important 2:51 really good work but something only group in the world that’s kind of bring it all the other groups try to work together and trying to see what’s you can do collaboratively and of course to spend your money wisely all the something goes with that. And I would say the 10 thing is, actually setting think your self. How should are our organization be fund, what is the rule of taxes in funding? What is the rule of voluntarism? What’s the rule of corporations, foundations and be clear about that as of philosophy not just as work and I get money. That’s a bit of tending I keep in mind.
