Luz Montez: Today!
John Palacio: Today!
Luz Montez: The Top Five Canadian Expressions. Welcome to Trip on a Deal, I'm Luz.
John Palacio: I'm John and this is a little ad for us but we’re researching our story an the Olympics Vancouver and we came across a great list of the Top Canadian Slang on the sight askmen.com which gives a little bit of inspiration so perhaps to them. I mean you need to know this list if you’re going to Canada right?
Luz Montez: They are just one time if you’re away. I think they’re just sort of like this.
John Palacio: Well, you know you grow up in a wacky and—
Luz Montez: That’s true.
John Palacio: These are a little familiar to you.
Luz Montez: That’s right.
John Palacio: Okay, so what are these?
Luz Montez: Well number five in our list of five, my favorite is KEENER. If it can look—look at it and say what a keener? It maybe a back kind of compliment basically showing this keen to show how smart they are like by saying we’re doing research and stuff like that. But frankly it’s a little bit of a brown—
John Palacio: Ouch!
Luz Montez: Just giving example.
John Palacio: Well, also keener is kind of earthy guide too right?
Luz Montez: Yeah and they can do this one.
John Palacio: —number four, pop quiz. You’re walking to a market in Vancouver; an old lady asks you for a Loonie what do you give her?
Luz Montez: A trip to the Bayview? I don’t know—something to say.
John Palacio: Okay yeah! It’s basically and give her a back, the one dollar coin that has a loonie on it on the coin’s face.
Luz Montez: A loonie it is a bird.
John Palacio: That’s right!
Luz Montez: That they have in Canada.
John Palacio: And to further publicate things , they now have a toonie.
Luz Montez: A toonie, do you pronounce the word.
John Palacio: Two loonies.
Luz Montez: Two loonies and there it is. There it is in our expensive money back there.
John Palacio: That’s right.
Luz Montez: So, you can tell the part. Number three Pop.
John Palacio: Pop! And so what did you call soda when you—
Luz Montez: Pop!
John Palacio: You’re good so in Canada it’s all by pop.
Luz Montez: Sometimes we said soda, sometimes you said soda pop.
John Palacio: And what do you call a pop in—
Luz Montez: A bubbler. Everybody knows the bubbler. You guys are going to get the program.
John Palacio: I guess so.
Luz Montez: A bubbler.
John Palacio: Number two.
Luz Montez: A Two-Four. You are heading to a Canadian—we don’t actually say—to say that, right.
John Palacio: Okay.
Luz Montez: They don’t expect you to bring a two-four, what is it? A case of 24 bottles again of beer meant to be consumed at night for all—
John Palacio: The great thing here is they have a Canadian Celebrate you know Queen Victoria’s Birthday. It’s on May 24.
Luz Montez: Yeah—
John Palacio: So, how do they celebrate? They get completely a hammer. Hail Holy Queen, that’s right yeah.
Luz Montez: I don’t want to be on a two-four.
John Palacio: Yeah!
Luz Montez: Interesting! Well this is important for all Americans to know if you go in to Canada so you can be a popular.
John Palacio: There you go!
Luz Montez: And the number one. Number one Canadian’s line we already know is the Hoser.
John Palacio: Well, you probably learned this from SCTV—basically, it means a loser, comes from the hockey days with the losing team would have to hose down the ring which is fun to say right?
Luz Montez: The hosers.
John Palacio: Yeah!
Luz Montez: No, it’s not really a word but shouldn’t—
John Palacio: Yeah if it was word but I mean it is more like sort of at the sole of Canada. I don’t think it’s a word, it’s—
Luz Montez: —it was left over your breath if you talk it?
John Palacio: Yeah.
Luz Montez: They say it’s actually—
John Palacio: You do it pretty good.
Luz Montez: —weak down your throat.
John Palacio: It’s not like Bargo but they do say it like that right.
Luz Montez: No, Milwaukee is not in Minnesota. I just want to put this on the record, on the internet—
John Palacio: Do they know this?
Luz Montez: They say it’s actually politely for Canadians to live in those spots for you to peak if I go and like a, it’s almost done.
John Palacio: Yes. Well, more about the Vancouver Olympics, watch our show at riponadeal.com, also follow us to tour.com/
