Hi I’m Gene Wang Fantasy Football writer for the Washington Post and
washingtonpost.com. Welcome to my video on how to play fantasy football. In this clip
I’m going to give you information that people have died trying to obtain the top 5 players
at each position going into the 2008 football season. Let’s start with the quarterback
because it is the most important position of the field, right.
Number one on that list is a no brainier; it’s Tom Brady of the New England Patriots.
This guy threw 50 touchdown passes last year, 7 in a record Patriots are a past happy
team Tom Brady to Randy Moss one of the best combinations in football history. If you
have chance to get Tom Brady you should early in the first round.
Number two quarterback Peyton Manning of Indianapolis Colts. This guy for years was
putting out numbers like Tom Brady. The difference between Tom Brady and Payton
Manning is very slim but you can’t go wrong with either one. I put Brady just ahead
Payton Manning but if you have the chance to pick Payton Manning you should have no
problem with a quarterback for the entire season this guy is never too behind Brett Favre
the second the game started. He’s never going to miss the start. He’s injury free and that’s
a very important thing to consider when drafting a quarterback.
Number three, Drew Brees of New Orleans Saints, the Saints love to throw the ball and
now that they forgot Jeremy Shockey tied in Drew Brees is going to be that much better.
Expect to get 30 plus catch of that off Brees maybe 4,000 yards. This guy really knows
how to throw a football.
Number four, Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys, he came on strong last year and is
quickly becoming one of the elite fancy quarterbacks if you have 36 touchdowns last year
set multiple Dallas Cowboys passing records. He has a great receiving group around him
that offense is very well oiled, it scores a lot of points. Tony Romo is your number four
fantasy quarterback.
At number five, Ben Roethlisberger with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now the Steelers
historically are known as a running team but last year when their new coach Mike
Tomlin, they opened up the offense and Ben Roethlisberger thrived. He has two great
receivers in Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes, plus an emerging tight end and Heath
Miller. Expect Roethlisberger to put a big passing numbers again in both the yards and
touchdowns.
Now let’s move on to the running back which to me is the most important position of
fantasy football. The number one running back with out question is LaDainian Tomlinson
of the San Diego Chargers. He is the single season touchdown leader and this guy can
score for you in three ways. You can rush for touchdowns. Catch touchdowns and even
throw an occasional touchdown. He is again the undisputed number one running back and
probably the undisputed number one player of fantasy football.
Number two, last year’s rookie of the year Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings, he
run for 1300 yards last year as a rookie and he missed a bunch of games. Imagine what he
could have done if he had played a full season. This guy has a world of potential and
could potentially unseat with LaDainian Tomlins as a number one fantasy player overall.
Number three, Brian Westbrook of the Philadelphia Eagles, the Eagles are going to be a
team you can tension throughout the whole season and Brian Westbrook is the majority
of their offense. He is much like with LaDainian Tomlins at San Diego and that he can
score by rushing and catching and he is their first option because a wide receiver core is
thin. He’s going to produce the shards catching and running the ball. He’s going to be a
great all purpose guy. He’s going to give you points in yardage heavy leagues as well as
touchdown heavy leagues.
Number four, Joseph Addai of Indianapolis Colts, now we all think of the Colts as a
passing team but don’t forget Joseph Addai scored 15 touchdowns last year. He can catch
it and he can score by running the ball too and he plays in a high powered offense that
scores a lot of points.
Number five is Clinton Portis of the Washington Redskins. No matter what system this
guy is in, he produces, he did it in Denver, he’s doing it in Washington. The Redskins
have a new position this year which is going to get the ball more in passes and in space so
expect him to have another big season.
Now let’s talk about the wide receivers. The number one wide receiver as I mentioned
earlier when I was talking about the quarterbacks, Randy Moss. Now Randy Moss with
the New England Patriots set a record last year for most touchdown catches so there’s no
reason to believe he’s not going to have a similar season with Tom Brady throwing him
the ball you know you can double cover this guy but he’s still going to get open. He’s one
the greatest receivers of our generation hands down.
Number two is Terrell Owens of the Dallas Cowboys. This guy keeps going and going
he’s in his 30’s you know but he still is pretty used to year, after year, after year say what
you want about his off the field antics every Sunday he shows up to play. He’s going to
get you 1300 yards, 15, 16 touchdowns and now with Tony Romo is an emerging
quarterback that combination is going to be a very effective fantasy combination go get
Terrell Owens if you can.
Number three, Reggie Wayne of the Indianapolis Colts, now for many years Marvin
Harrison was the number one and number two fan two receiver but Marvin Harrison had
his share of injuries last year and Reggie Wayne has set up to be the number one wide
receiver. Payton Manning to Reggie Wayne is going to be a great combination. Reggie
Wayne is going to get double figure touchdowns. He’s going to have 13 to 1400 yards
receiving. He’s the guy you should go get.
Number four, Braylon Edwards of the Cleveland Browns, now this might be what
surprises but Braylon Edwards is one of the emerging young stars in the league. Derek
Anderson is one of the emerging young stars at quarterback. Braylon Edwards clearly
broke out last season, I expect him to have another great season this year.
Number five, Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals, this guy plays in small market
team but he produces big numbers every year. He has a new contract that he is happy
with and even if it’s Kurt Warner or Matt Leinart throwing the ball he’s always a number
one option. He can get open in double teams, hell he can get over to triple teams and they
love to feel of the ball in Arizona. He is the number five wide receiver in this year’s
fantasy draft.
So you filled out your quarterback, running back and wide receiver positions you’re
halfway there. You fill out the three most important parts of your team now let’s move on
to tight end kicker and defense secondary part of your fantasy team but still can be very
important in helping win games.
