Leila: After Kim Klein has thought fund raising in 21 countries and founded the [Muffled] fund raising journal in 1981. Her specialty involves adapting traditional fund raising techniques particularly major donor campaigns to the needs of organization with small budgets. Working for social justice.
Kim: I think organization of obligation diversify their funding and make sure that anybody or any source of funding said we are not funding you anymore the organization gets a well we are sorry we will miss you but they can continue to do there work.
Leila: Organizations easily get into the habit of getting government money or foundation funding but these forms of revenue are very uncertain. What happens when someone else get selected introduce tax cuts and the money goes the way or the stock market drives along with foundation funding?
Kim: You see a lot of organizations they have big budgets one year then small budgets and big and small then they get smaller, smaller and smaller and they lay off people and they do not serve a society productively.
Leila: Welcome to watchmojo.com I am your host Leila, I ask Kim Klein what 10 things we should know on how to raise funds in uncertain times?
Kim: Be very clear about your cost. You have to be lying to ask for money. You need to keep in mind the people are giving away their money and they either going to give it to you or they going to give it to somewhere else. These seven out of ten people showing money they are going to give it away. I think the fourth thing is you need a group of people to help you. You cannot do this by yourself you know that is the nature of an organizations and if you cannot find anyone to help you, you have to think to yourself does anyone else care about this?
And I think the fifth thing is once you get a donation is to be sure to thank people and to be great full and to be appreciative and to keep track of your people.
And the sixth thing you know some people information about how are you doing either send them emails, some of news letters let them know who are gift made a difference. Something would be the best person to ask person from money is someone who just gave you money. That is the person most likely to give you a money and people from no, no I surely gave them and I never going to ask it again but if you think of churches? How often the churches asked? I mean every guy use a down right away if 52 times a year so we really want to ask over and over. But every time we ask we are like thank you so much what you did already, could you help us again? So you know if the people cannot help of all those say no.
And that would be the eight thing; none of us can give money. No matter how wealthy we are we cannot give money to all the groups you know are supports. So we have to say no to some of them we want to be gracious when people say yes and we want it to be really gracious when they say no. We always say fundraising no a short from not now. I do not have the money now, I do not care enough now, and I am busy now.
Well the ninth thing would be to be gracious about other groups. I mean kind of know your groups are really important just to get a really good work but that is not the only in the world, that is kind of bring it all the other group trying to work together, try to see what you can do collaboratively and then of course spend your money wisely all the stuff that goes with that.
And I would say the tenth thing is actually really sit and thank yourself, how should our organization be fund? What is the role of taxes and funding it? What is the role of voluntarism? What is the role of corporation foundation and to be clear about that as a philosophy not just as where I can get money? Those would be the 10 things I keep in mind.
