Chaz Rough: Hi, welcome everyone to this edition of Lookin’ at Louisville, I’m Chaz.
Stacey Yates: And I’m Stacey.
Chaz Rough: Now, do you remember that jingle?
Stacey Yates: I sure do. We thought wait for this podcast. We will do our Louisville tech on that jingle.
Chaz Rough: Yes.
Stacey Yates: Mainly because we have a really exciting event having an entertainment at Louisville Slugger Field in July, the Triple A All Star Game and we talk about that and your baseball such as America’s favorite past time. It’s such a part of the fabric and wall ball with almost soccer bats being made here and everything that we have it here at Peterson Field.
Chaz Rough: Yeah.
Stacey Yates: You now just—was in a college world series in the past two years.
Chaz Rough: Past two years in the court of valley sports in the south end of Louisville, one the Little League World championship series.
Stacey Yates: Right, that was the community really rallied around them. It was an exciting part.
Chaz Rough: Really great—
Stacey Yates: Yeah. Now, we’re not only famous for our hotdogs here. We’ve got some good ones that will let our friends up the roads in Cincinnati at Louisville we’re planning to that, but actually in Louisville, Kentucky we are the home of the creation of the cheese burger.
Chaz Rough: You have cheese burger, did you say cheese burger?
Stacey Yates: Oh, cheese burger. In 1934, so we’ll talk about that.
Chaz Rough: You’re going to—
Stacey Yates: We’re going to go—for desert. I want to go to the apple pie portion of course we did not talk about derby pie which maybe we’ll talk about that in a huge Derby episode with that Illinois from Kurt’s Kitchen. We’re going to go to get one of their all time best selling favorite it’s the apple pie—and then there’s the Chevrolet in Dakota. And this is not Chevrolet land, this is Ford country.
Chaz Rough: Now, for this one of the local’s largest employers and they have two plants right here on—
Stacey Yates: Right.
Chaz Rough: And we’re going to cruise around Louisville. We’re going to take you at this in a Ford convertible Mazda.
Stacey Yates: We’ll have a lot of fun in this episode. Let’s play ball.
Here we are at gorgeous Louisville Slugger Field with the president of the Louisville Bats, Gary Ulmer and we’re going to talk baseball. Gary, tell us about this.
Chaz Rough: Hello Gary, you said you’re going to let me hit the ball, right?
Gary Ulmer: Okay, I’m positive that I’m going to find something for you dude. Well, I talk about the marathon players for the game.
Chaz Rough: Okay, can I go run the basics?
Stacey Yates: Why don’t you do that, Chaz? Let’s talk about the—
Gary Ulmer: I’ve got a better idea. You see that 405 center field? Why don’t you spring up there and buy, we’ll tell you.
Chaz Rough: Can I do that?
Gary Ulmer: Go ahead, go for it.
Chaz Rough: I will do that.
Stacey Yates: Starting now.
Chaz Rough: Okay.
Stacey Yates: And how do we got rid of him? Tell us some about this exciting event.
Gary Ulmer: July 16th, the—All Star Game. Come to Louisville along with the—Fame feast on July 14, a couple of exciting nights and really a once in a lifetime opportunity. These events can never be back to Louisville, the opportunity to see future fall of famers right here in Louisville Slugger Field, let’s just sought after then. There’s a lot of nice cities, a lot of nice stadiums out there and so the time was right for us to build upon it and now here it is but it really is a game and event that you’ll not be back in Louisville maybe in your lifetime but I don’t mind and so.
Stacey Yates: Yeah.
Gary Ulmer: We hope the fans embrace it and enjoy it.
Stacey Yates: And really—5% it was like 16.
Gary Ulmer: Now you’ve cheated, do it again.
Stacey Yates: Yeah.
Chaz Rough: What?
Gary Ulmer: You’ve cheated.
Stacey Yates: It wasn’t nearly like that. Now, we’re going like two minutes.
Chaz Rough: Are you serious?
Stacey Yates: And I don’t think we’ve got it.
Gary Ulmer: You know one thing when the scouts are right here looking a talent, what they like to see is from home to third.
Stacey Yates: Hit it.
Chaz Rough: I get warmed up a little bit more, right?
Stacey Yates: Right.
Gary Ulmer: Alright, I know I know that you have a nice shirt but go for it.
Chaz Rough: No, I’ve got it.
Stacey Yates: We were on affordability. I think the ticket price is at $16.00.
Gary Ulmer: $16.00 to $20.00.
Stacey Yates: Talk more about the Fame Feast.
Gary Ulmer: Fame Feast, gone record we’ve granted.
Stacey Yates: I get it right? The Commissions bank can just happen now.
Gary Ulmer: Granted over 50,000 square feet of convention centers, so this Sunday through the Tuesday of All Star Game will be the Fame Feast, all kind of stuff and everything from autographs. They all start teams and—players to a big waffle ball field. Designed to look like a miniature Louisville Slugger Field where kids can get out to play, but it’s small substandard for families to bring the children down, spend a few hours on the Sunday afternoon—
Stacey Yates: Wonderful, we certainty—folks in town to do that, come and play All Star Game but especially if you’re out of town. Go to our website at gotolouisville.com and book your hotel right in and get a whole package online and come and enjoy this summer break baseball.
Gary Ulmer: Absolutely.
Stacey Yates: Thanks Gary.
Gary Ulmer: Well, thank you for coming out.
Stacey Yates: I notice the privilege to actually be in the field and he comes back.
Gary Ulmer: Where you’re not dirty.
Stacey Yates: Yeah.
Chaz Rough: Yeah, I know —
Stacey Yates: We’ve done the important work now we’ll let you buy.
Chaz Rough: There we go.
Well, kids we’re talking about baseball. We had to come to this part of museum where they are having a very, very cool exhibit. It’s baseball signed by the president he already told that big shot for the game started, well, they have tons of here from Bill Clinton to Richard Nixon.
Stacey Yates: By the way back to Teddy Roosevelt.
Chaz Rough: Yeah, here Teddy Roosevelt when he signed it. It was May 14.
Stacey Yates: Probably.
Chaz Rough: So, that’s pretty cool.
Stacey Yates: And really full of exhibits. Let’s come play ball Mr. President and come inside with the collection here, so it’s going to be running through November 30th. In fact, I have a special place. I already reserved for that Cane signed ball and Obama signed ball, and every good question mark is like a waiting for who is going to be the president—he’s actually the first president and done his first speech in 1910 and every president’s sons have—
Chaz Rough: Alright, now we finally made over here to lunch and boy it was good. We’re here at Kaelin’s restaurant in a highland where they are the creators of the cheese burgers. Now—
Stacey Yates: And a lot of people just spit that. There’s a couple other restaurants out there in the US that like claim to this but they’ve actually done some investigations on it.
Chaz Rough: Yes, and tell me what? Go check it.
Stacey Yates: Yeah, there’s on the web. The two other restaurants that have claimed to it where had menus dating from 1935 and 1937 and Kaelin’s actually has a menu from 1934, and that hamburger have been around for a while in the United States from the 1880s on, but they say, Carl Kaelin was the first too and his kitchen one day sitting around thinking, “Oh, I think I’ll put this slice of American cheese on this hamburger.” And as it’s so hot and as it melted he said this is the cheese burger put on the menu for 15 cents in 1934 and they’ve been serving it ever since. I had the mini-cheese burgers which—and Mark are faithful producer. I am actually the big fan.
Chaz Rough: Mac Gaiety
Stacey Yates: American cheese burger.
Chaz Rough: You know I actually have a grilled chicken sandwich with some —restaurants, so you can get—
Stacey Yates: And had a presto.
Chaz Rough: Yeah, that’s right.
Stacey Yates: Pretty face for Kaelin’s.
Chaz Rough: So, you know the cool thing is that you can come here and get a little bit of the hamburger and—five fill and then you give to somebody real chicken and some—so you get a little bit of a healthy food too.
Stacey Yates: And they also had in the menu a graham cakes—
Chaz Rough: Okay, where are we going next?
Stacey Yates: We are going to have desert at the Home Made Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen to kind of complete our whole theme of the segment at the apple pie segment.
Chaz Rough: Okay, let’s go.
Stacey Yates: Let’s go.
Chaz Rough: I don’t know about you but this is a great way to end the day. We’ve got to eat some ice cream here from the Home Made Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen here at the highlands.
Stacey Yates: Right.
Chaz Rough: Where they have main location but this is the first restaurant.
Stacey Yates: This is the original. This is my best home grill in Louisville establishments and what a great one. We also in front of this is their number one seller kind of fit in our whole theme for the day, baseball, cheese burgers, apple pie on board. This is their Dutch apple with the caramel topping and it’s their number one seller of course they also have derby pie but like I said earlier we’re going to talk about that in our derby episode next year.
Chaz Rough: And one of the great thing we got the all stars coming here to Slugger Field it’s a must see for anyone want to come and visit..
Stacey Yates: As Gary Ulmer’s said, it’s a once a lifetime event for Louisville, so check that out and if you don’t get a chance to come in July 16 for that event. Do come to best baseball they play during Labor Day—that is.
Chaz Rough: And you can actually go to episode one where we’re actually going to Slugger Field and give you a little bit more information, and I can tell what a rush it was actually hit on that field.
Stacey Yates: You finally get a chance to do it.
Chaz Rough: Yeah, I’ve got a good work out too as you guys—
Stacey Yates: My hair got a work out today.
Chaz Rough: And some other great news are coming out in next month whether you want.
Stacey Yates: And finally we got to talk about the Ryder Cup, we’re going to do a preview episode on that, that’s golf of it. It’s coming out in Louisville in September so I’m very excited about that.
Chaz Rough: And they’re going wide screen—so we’re moving up a knot to see you all.
Stacey Yates: Right, it’s going to fit my hips from all of this food.
Chaz Rough: So, no more ice cream for you. Now it’s very important that you interact with this year in this podcast because if you give us the ideas we’ll soon single this one, so please send us emails at podcast@gotolouisville.com and as always.
Stacey Yates: You’re Lookin’ at Louisville.
Chaz Rough: See you real soon. Let’s eat.
So, there you go. There’s the official game ball I’ve got to head on here at Slugger Field, that’s pretty cool. Thank you Gary for helping me to have a little dream here at Slugger Field.
