One of this country’s most attractive qualities is its warm and friendly climate. Hi, I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to WatchMojo.com.
Today we’re continuing our travel profiles with look at Belize. Known as British Honduras until 1973 Belize is located in Central America. The country’ is bordered by Guatemala Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. It is the only officially English speaking country in the region however, most Belizean’s speak Belize credo, an English based credo language. The population of Belize is little over 300,000 and its capital is Belmopan. Belize can be divided into three sections based on climate and geography. In the north the land is low and flat, built with swamp areas and lagoons. Rainforest can also be found I this region.
There are also rainforest in the south of Belize although still at a generally low elevation it is higher than in the north. This helps sustain the evergreen forest and pine savannas such as those in the Maya Mountains. These mountains run from Belize and to Guatemala and include the Mountain Pine Ridge. In the third section of Belize is found the Offshore Cayes or small islands. Most of this region has not been developed by humans.
Ambergris Caye is one of the largest Cayes which supports a thriving tourist community. Conditions in Belize are moist and tropical. The weather is comprised of two main seasons, the rainy and the dry seasons. Dry season is the most popular tourist time which occurs between December and May. Belize City is warm all year with temperatures averaging 72 degrees in the dry season and up to 88 degrees in the rainy season. Temperatures in the Mountain Pine Ridge can fall as low as 63 degrees in December. The climate on occasion is ideal for such activities such as scuba diving and snorkeling, fishing and various other water sports. In fact, the great Blue Hole an underwater sinkhole located at Belize coast was named one of the top 10 diving location in the world.
Belize is home to highly diverse and tropical species of flora and fauna. The Belize zoo is a great place to see the country’s native fauna and its natural habitat, jaguars, monkeys, and various tropical birds are some of the animal creatures you may encounter. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary was established originally into steady and protects the native jaguar but it is also important in plant conservation. This reserve takes a plane from the ridge of the Cockscomb Mountain which resembles a rooster’s comb. The mine people are best known for their only fully developed Briton language in the pre-Columbian Americas. They are also well known for their art in architecture and mathematical and astrological systems. The Maya Ruins of Belize are well known and historically important and include many pre-Columbian by Maya archaeological sites, sites such as Caracol, Lamanay and Xunantunich are some of the best known.
