Hi! Welcome to WatchMojo.com. My name is Karen and today we’ll be profiling the City of Casablanca. Casablanca is the largest city of Morocco and it’s also its economic capital. It was first established by a Berber tribe with Anfa into their capital. Now Anfa is now a suburb of Casablanca. In 1912, the French protector was instated and Casablanca, as we know it today, with its modern architecture was built by the French in the twentieth century. Now, if you’re going to Casablanca, the must see, must visit place is the Hassan II Mosque which is the largest mosque in Africa. It’s built on the Atlantic Ocean and it was built in the 1993 to commemorate the King Hassan’s II 60th birthday. It’s also one of the only Muslim religious buildings to be opened to non-Muslims, so make sure not to miss out on that one.
Then you have Place des Nations Unies which is basically the heart of the city. That’s where the old city meets the new city and that’s also the central point of downtown Casablanca. That’s where all the main streets run out into a bunch of different directions. So I said right next to it is the old city that we call Medina. And that’s where you will be able to practice a bit of your bargaining skills. Just make sure not to wonder there at night because it could get a little bit dangerous.
And there’s the Jewish Museum of Casablanca, which is the only museum in Casablanca and it’s also the only Jewish Museum in a Muslim country. You definitely want to take a walk and hang out there, which is the beach side boulevard. That’s where you’ll find all the big five star hotels, all the bars, clubs, cafes, restaurants, beach clubs, everything is there. There are a couple of dates to keep in mind if you go to Casablanca. In October you have the International Dance Festival. We also have the International Festival of Poetry. A couple of famous people born in Casablanca include French Actor Zcahunu, Comediane Galimali and composer Mojis Oana.
