Welcome to watch mojo.com. My name is Berna and I'm going to be profiling the city of Kolkata, in India for you.
Now for over two millennium now there have been people living around Kolkata. But it’s only officially down in the record books at since 1686 which is one of the British came and took over. Everything runs smoothly until 1756, which is when Siraj-Ud-Daulah attacks the town and then drove the British away.
Lord Robert Clive retook Kolkata in1911 and then the capital of Kolkata, the name of it anyway was taken away and it given to New Delhi in India which was a newly built city of that time. However, Kolkata did remain the capital of the undivided Bengal until the Partition of India or India’s Independence in 1947.
Kolkatta’s Port was bombed in December ’42 and then again in January ’43 because of the Japanese are in World War II. Then they have to deal with the Bengal famine on ’43 and then only three years later, the direct action days which was planned as a peaceful day is devil’s disobedience ended up being a secretary in violence which broke out and killed over 2000 citizens. So the 70s are a violent Marxist-Maoist movement also known as the Naxalites which ruined the city’s infrastructure. Btu Kalkota’s economic recovery flew through the roof after the 90s.
Today in Kalkata and it’s the Capital state of west Bengal and have the second to large population in India with over 13 million. It’s very possible that Kalkatta and kolkatta have derived from the name Kalikata which was a village back ages ago. The reason Kolkatta was changed to Culcatta in 2001 was because what was rematch conserve of political move and they remain thought. It was too English and describes what the British had put upon them years ago.
So the Durga Puja is a huge festival in Kolkata a lot for four days and to really good time for people just to celebrate life. Although there is a really just background to it, it’s becoming their biggest social festival. People go on like dance on the shopping streets by each other’s clothes, invite their family friends over just to catch up and range huge feast with deserts and a whole bunch of other things. And the city is lit up with lights, fireworks at night and they’re always theaters performances release type dances all day long.
There are also speakers situated all over the city and the bluff lam music so much that you can in and sweep at night but most people don’t really think to mind it. There’s also the Saraswati puja which is basically a festival for the goddess of learning. It takes place around January and February and my personal belief why it takes place of that time is because over there, there are huge exams and finals through all the students so I guess this is a good way for them to prepare.
There’s also the Kalkotta book there which you might want to check out. It’s really huge, very popular then media eve covers it in the newspapers everyday on TV and you can’t miss it.
There’s also the Victorian Memorial Hall which open in 1921 and then there’s a lot of paintings, ancient artifacts that you can go and check out over there. There’s also the Indian Museum which is built in 1875 and has really impressive architectural and Italian structure.
Now, if you’re travelling with kids, you’re going to want to make sure that they have fun too. So you might want to check out what in Kolkata is called the Zoological Garden. There’s a huge lakes inside the zoo and there are Siberian birds of vacancy. It is built in 1876 and it covers over 16 hectares of land so there’s going to be a lot to see for the kids there. They cannot go there and not have to get time.
There is also what they call the Holy Cultural Garden. They have huge competitions on February and it covers so much land. There are many tents built up inside, the media goes crazy over that when the competitions take place. There are all types of flowers, plants, whether it’s for vegetables or fruits or these shapes and flowers that you’ve never seen before. I've been there myself and its really great place to check out if you’re looking for a good afternoon spent outside.
My final list is the Birla Planetarium also a god choice for kids. They give presentations and all languages including English so you won’t be too confused if you visit.
