Manjit Devgun: Munich is one of the most beautiful and fun loving cities in Germany. The 800 year old capital of Bavaria is rich with rustic charm, but it’s an elegant, sophisticated city on the move. Opera, theater, thriving high-tech and media industries, wonderful park land, world class museums and a marvelous range of architecture from baroque to stunning modern design and of course there is the beer.
A good starting point is the historic center around Marienplatz, surrounded by museums, cafes, beer halls, gardens and churches including the twin domes of the Frauenkirche.
One of Munich’s greatest treasures is the English Garden opened in 1792 and today one of the largest urban parks in Europe. This spectacular green space offers visitors and many of bliss out local and escape from the daily grind. Enjoy miles of walking and biking paths, vast meadows, streams, a small lake and how about some nude sun bathing. Follow the Eisbach, a stream running through the park and you’ll discover much more. Just don’t forget your foot.
Then take your full body tan over to the famous Chinese Tower where you’ll find one of Munich’s most popular beer gardens under the shady trees, locals of all persuasions come together to eat, drink and with the little help be merry.
A must for science lovers, just off the southern end of the park, stands the Deutsches Museum. One of the oldest, largest and greatest science museums in the world from the stone aged to the present, from U-boats to Atomic Physics give it as much time as you can afford.
In Schwabing, Munich’s former Bohemian quarter and now a trendy neighborhood filled with bars, galleries and boutiques. You’ll find the perfect tide away at Hotel La Maison. Clean, quiet, relaxing, upscale, this is a modern design hotel but with a personal intimate atmosphere emphasizing warmth and hospitality, La Maison is known for it’s friendly and welcoming service as a pleasant, soothing and stylish home away from home.
Michelle Sagum: We don’t just offer our guests a bed for the night. We also made them feel at home.
Manjit Devgun: When you mentioned traditional German cuisine the word vegetarian doesn’t always come to mind, but just around the corner from the world famous half brewery house, a temple of over indulgence, enter Saf im Zerwirk, and you most certainly be surprise. In the house of the 700 years old, you’ll find one of Munich’s newest hot spots and most likely Germany’s first vegan restaurant serving an absolutely delicious selection of creative vegan and raw food dishes made from local, seasonal and organic produce.
Ender Filvuran: Saf im Zerwirk is the first restaurant in Germany that serves raw food since December 2007. We do run our restaurant, up sells here for lunch and dinner time, and also have a daily dances in the entrance area.
Manjit Devgun: Care for some beet root ricotta ravioli with cashew cheese filling.
Later, head to Edmoses, very cool, very popular, one of the hippest bars in Munich, revolving DJs, bringing the crowds so come early. This former gallery space has beautiful décor with a long, sleek bar, black and red sofas, video screens and huge floor to ceiling windows offering views of the world passing by.
Nils Jager: We’re kind of hidden which is cool and we’re right by the English Garden across from the house and I think this is an advantage for us people come here they heard about it and they are cool.
Manjit Devgun: Weather permitting there’s a bustling scene on the outdoor patio, sometimes including special events such as soccer games on large monitors.
Now go to the heart of old town where one of Munich’s hottest clubs awaits. The 8 Seasons is on the fifth floor of a downtown building slated for reconstruction. When it opened in 2004, the club was supposed to last only two years or eight seasons, but that time has come and gone and 8 Seasons is still going strong.
Tom Kriegenherd: Here on, right in the middle of Munich in the city center on 8 Seasons is the only roof top house club in Munich.
Manjit Devgun: Take a break from the party inside and have a drink on what some called the club’s main attraction, the gorgeous roof top terrace with spectacular city views, a perfect place to wind down a pleasant summer night.
In Munich living well is the best revenge. In winter you’ve got Alps. In summer cafes, beer gardens and nearby lakes, a thriving economy and abundance of nature, great art and refined culture offerings. No wonder Munichal Magazine called it the most livable city in the world.
This is Manjit signing off on City by City.
