Hey! I’m Neal. Welcome back to the Guitar Tricks Channel. We got your lesson of the week and tip of the week. Tip of the week is playing with your right hand. Moving it around you can get different sounds out of your guitar but playing over the sound hole or back by the bridge. You can use this as an acoustic guitar or electric guitar. I’m going to give you an example playing first over the sound hole and then second by the back bridge so you can hear the difference.

It gives you that kind of surf sound. But that’s not all you’re limited to. By moving around you can find all kinds of little voices in there for acoustic or electric guitar. This week‘s lesson is on finger picking technique and I’m going to show you a version of the Travis pick. Made popular by Meryl Travis and this is a request from one of our friends on Facebook, Stewart Johns (ph) wanted an example of acoustic, anything. So I thought this was a good acoustic something that you could use to Travis pick and use it in the opening lick. So what I’m going to do is break it down for you and show you how it works. I’ll be using the A minor chord open, the D minor chord open, and the G major chord open.
[Demonstration]
I’m going to break it down to a little bit slower. We’ll be using the four middle strings of the guitar. The B, the D, the G, and the A and we’ll start by plucking the outside of the two strings, the A and the B with your thumb and the middle finger. Then you are going to pluck the middle two strings one at a time with your thumb, and then your index finger. And then we’re going to pluck the outward strings again one at a time with your thumb and your middle finger. And the last pluck will be on the D string with your thumb. So here it is at slow—

Now when I move to the D minor chord, you’re going to take the same pattern and just shift all way up to the higher strings playing the top four strings of the guitar, same pattern.

Back to the A

Go to the G. Now when I go to the G, the only difference would be I’ll be playing my thumb on the E string instead of the A string because that’s where the low note is.

Back to the A

That’s the basic pattern, really simple. Here it is fast.

I encourage you just this technique and try other course you know and mess around to get creative. Take this technique and make it your own. And that’s really handy technique. What delineates a Travis pick is that the thumb is thumping more than one beat per measure. That’s what it makes with the Travis pick. Lisa McCormick, one of our guitar tricks instructor goes into this in more details and she’s got some more variations on the Travis picking and finger picking technique. Come on by and leave me a comment or a request here on YouTube or on MySpace or on twitter. Or in the forum at guitar tricks. Have a great week. I’ll see you here in seven days and keep on plucking.
