Treating Back Pain

Jeff: I'm Jeff from Yellow Springs, Ohio. When I have back pain, is it better to move around, say, lumbar or be still in rest?

Daveed Frazier: Jeff, I think, that's a great question. We see a lot of patients who have back pain and they feel that they should stay in bed for one day, two days, three days or more. The studies have been very clear to us that states that bed rest greater than 24 to 48 hours actually is worse for you. So the best treatment for back pain is to be as active as possible in terms of motion. That motion should primarily be just walking. I would probably avoid stretching until you have actually seen a specialist, because if you stretch in a wrong direction, you may make your problem worse, but activity in terms of ambulation and walking is actually in your best interest.
