Treatment Options for Anorexia

Cindy: Hi! I am Cindy, from Cleveland, Ohio. My friend has anorexia and sometimes it seems hopeless. What are the possible treatments?

Dr. Jill Kindy: Cindy, I know it's hard to watch your friend struggle through this disease. It is a mental health disorder, and so it can't better on its own. It does not need treatment.

The treatment options include working with a psychologist, working with a psychiatrist, often times a dietitian is brought in to work on the food issues, and sometimes we send them to a physician to make sure that they are medically stable.

And so we have a whole treatment team, and even then it can still be a struggle, but the eating disorder for your friend is a coping mechanism, at some level it helps her. So we need to give her some other tool to help her and to cope with whatever she is trying to deal with.
